Since she didn't have a job any longer, or friends, really, Inara had taken to walk around the City. A lot. Walking was good for you, kept your body occupied, but it left her mind too free for her liking, sometimes. And she had so much to think about.
Most of the time, she meditated to clear her mind, to calm herself. But when she wasn't focusing on breathing and relaxing her muscles, thoughts crept in, unbidden, and took over. Thoughts she'd rather avoid, partly because she could. Avoidance was a luxury her previous life hadn't afforded her.
So she walked.
She rarely got lost, being seemingly equipped with some sort of inner compass that always pointed her to the way home eventually. Besides, it wasn't like she had anything to come back to. And there was always someone who'd give a pretty lady directions.
But it didn't help when the City changed around on her.
Having come across a square that looked vaguely familiar, only some things were definitely off about it, Inara sighed. Another one of those days. The City was usually kind to her. Well, she couldn't have good luck forever. Pausing, she looked around, wondering who she could ask about the current location of the square, when she noticed a familiar head of dark hair, passing through on the other side. Smiling, Inara hurried to catch up.
"Captain!" she called out towards Jack's retreating back.
