The wolf discovered something in it's path very shortly after leaving the area of it's cave. Something human. There was a different smell to this one. No fear. No worry. This human was out after dark and didn't seem to be concerned about it. It also didn't smell as if it had inherited an animal of it's own. Doubly curious.
It stayed still at first, using the shadows to hide itself from the human until it could actually see what it was facing. Putting eyes on the enemy was a lot smarter than just charging.
But when it saw the male, it stopped being afraid. There was not much there to be afraid of. It was a confident human, sure, but not very big at all. The wolf stepped out from it's hiding spot into the clearing-like space between it and the man. It did not growl, it just looked. From it's first bite of human flesh, the accidental nip of the young female, it had discovered that humans did not taste very good, so the wolf did not plan on hunting this one. It figured that it could let the human go on doing whatever it was doing, and the human would let the wolf continue on it's business as well.
