The night after Harley's hyena had nipped her, Dinah felt extremely strange. Alfred had patched her up, but all day her arm had itched like crazy. She'd fought the need to scratch, but it was hard to ignore.
She'd decided to take an early shower after dinner, and as soon as she got out of the shower, the change started. She'd ended up curled up into the fetal position on the bathroom floor as pain wracked her body. She tried to cry out, and didn't know if she'd succeeded or not.
But then, just as suddenly, the bathroom around her started to grow very rapidly and then the pain stopped. She looked around, feeling a little like Alice in Wonderland after she'd taken the shrinking potion.
This was a dream. It had to be.
Dinah hopped and suddenly her arms spread and she seemed to catch a breeze and rose through the air. She landed on the sink, where she looked into the mirror and found... a canary? Staring back at her.
"What the..." she tried to say, though it came out as more of a warble that vaguely resembled words.
This was a dream. It had to be a dream. That was the only explanation.
Dinah once again spread what used to be her arms-now wings, if the mirror was anything to go by-and flapped. It took a few tries, but she finally got the hang of catching the breeze with her feathers and flew off the sink. A few more flaps and she was out the window, soaring over the City. It was exhilarating, watching the gigantic buildings underneath her as she soared over them.
After a very long flight, she came to settle on a balcony. It was a moment before she noticed the other, larger bird, perched there. When she did, she looked over and tried for a nod, though it must have looked very odd, a little yellow canary nodding her head.
