Dinah sighed heavily as the car stopped. She opened the door and gestured toward the house.
"Come on inside. There should be a phone book in the study. We can call you a cab."
She waited for Harry to exit the car before she started speaking again.
"You hurt me, Harry. And I'd like to say that we were both just stressed out and said things we didn't mean, but I'm pretty sure you did mean them. When it comes down to it, it doesn't matter how I feel about the fact that you're living with a woman who has feelings for you, because I'm just your girlfriend, but she's the only family you have here."
She paused, gathering up her breath and doing her best to keep her voice steady.
"And I tried to be okay with it. I really did. I hope that at least, after tonight, you realize that the whole 'not welcome' feeling wasn't all in my head."
She bit her lip, trying very hard to keep the tears at bay now.
"I just think maybe it's better if we take a break for now. I want to move past this, or better yet, pick up where we left off before everything happened with Jake, but I don't think I'll be able to do that as long as she's still living with you." She tried to meet his eyes, her chin set stubbornly. "And that's not an ultimatum. I'm not asking you to kick anyone out or change anything. I'm just taking a step back from the situation and we can revisit things if-when,” she corrected herself, “she gets settled in her own place.”
She stood on her tiptoes and brushed a gentle kiss against his lips, then broke away again. It might have seemed like more of a goodbye than anything else, because a part of her didn't really think that he would call when Murphy was settled into her own place.
Without waiting for a response, she turned and headed into the Manor to find the phone book and call a cab. Her shoulders shook slightly, but she wasn't going to let herself break down and really cry until he was gone.
