Amelia's head snapped up at the sudden intrusion. The gentleman was rude and presuming. How did he know what she was looking for? And without a proper introduction. It seemed the future- if that was what this was- was not a place where common manners and decency were to be expected. She sat up straight, her back perfectly vertical yet not touching the back of the chair. Years of wearing a corset had naturally trained her posture, along with her proper English etiquette. She didn't even realize she was doing it. Her brow creased in confusion at his mention of Egypt, until she recalled the books in front of her. But her assessment of his manners quickly flew out of her mind at what he said next.
Another world? What did he mean by that? And how was she not to be alarmed by such a suggestion?
The man was nothing if not observant. Amelia noted nothing in her appearance that would indicate she was not of this time. Her clothing and hairstyle, even her make up which had taken a bit of trial and error to get right, were all things she had seen on other women of her age.
"The others here in the library have been very helpful." Overly helpful, it could be noted. She had learned all about the device she'd been informed was a "cell" or "mobile", but it was useless as far as she was concerned. It wasn't as if she had anyone she wanted to reach in this place. Amelia carried it with her out of habit, if only because she was also informed that one could reach emergency personnel quickly. Considering that...person...she had met in the park, and the rapid pace everything seemed to move at around here, knowing the police or medical people were easily reachable was a comfort.
"I know how to access files and search for books. I can't imagine having any other use for it." It was a clever contraption, and much quicker and easier to navigate than a card catalog, but beyond that it was a confusing machine that held little interest for the Victorian matron. History was what interested her, and books were where a person located it.
"What did you mean by another world, Mr...?" It was becoming more and more common around here for her to have to hint at an introduction. It was how any conversation with a stranger should begin. Yet she worded it politely, rather than inserting her normal indignation at such a faux pas in her voice.
This just might be a man that could actually give her answers, and she didn't want to appear overbearing and chase him off.
