As they walked into the city streets, she couldn't help but be reminded again of that terrible night when the darkness revealed the cruelty it harbored here in this paved maze. She very rarely explored the night; she was often on her porch when the sun set -- and in bed not too soon after that. Apart from rising early to tend the bookstore, she still held to her country risings, which were always at the very break of dawn. Even if she hadn't held a job, she would still keep her sleep schedule in tune with the sun and moon.
As a result, she hadn't had much occassion to examine or even discover just how terrified she was of these city streets after the attack Errol prevented from becoming ugly. It seemed so long ago. She missed him terribly -- but tonight, tonight when she needed someone to be her protector, she missed him even more. Where was he? Why was she alone? Her fingers slid through wetness under her eyes again and she dabbed ineffectively at it in an attempt to maintain some dignity in all of this. But she was both terrified and heartbroken and she still had so much in front of her to do, so much she must see through to the end before she could rest.... She was tired, she was overwhelmed. She was very close to the end of her rope. And now she was in the City at night with a man who made her uneasy to say the least -- and reliant on him for her safety.
She almost missed his question.
"He said you... he already knew you when ... Don't you know him? Eric, I mean. A tall man, pale, severe, and wtih eyes that..."
She actually shuddered. His eyes had eaten her whole and turned her into something she wasn't, made her say things she never would have... She shoved her knuckles against her lips. Where were they going now? She craved the daylight, in that very moment -- day was safe, day was clear, day let her see.
"You know him," she told Lestat. "You have to know him."
Because if he didn't know him, then she didn't know what else she could do but run. And run. And in a City like this, there was nowhere she could truly run to.
