"Easy for you to say," Dinah said with a self-deprecating smile. "And I think I'll take a pass on the champagne. Last time I accepted a free drink, I ended up kidnapped by vampires who planned to use me as a human sacrifice." She shook her head slightly. "In fact, I'm pretty sure they ruined red wine for me all together." Her tone was light, though her eyes didn't quite hide the fact that it was still a fairly fresh nightmare for her.
"Enjoy your night, Fred," Dinah said.
She stepped back into the ballroom and edged around the dance floor. She tried not to look over at Harry and the stunning brunette. She was glad he was having fun, and she certainly didn't think dancing with someone else was a crime. It was just the fact that, their first time around dating, Oliver could work a room that same way. It was fine with her until it started being more than just dancing and harmless flirting.
Not that she thought Harry was the same way. That had been one of the things that attracted her to him in the first place after all. How very not like Oliver he had been.
A little bit of anger at her ex rose up. She hated not feeling secure, hated that feeling of not fully being able to trust her own feelings, or the feelings of anyone who might come to care for her.
Fred was right-there were very few things scarier than facing the prospect of a broken heart. Though Dinah didn't exactly consider herself a 'champion,' but Fred's description of the fear was fitting all the same.
When it came down to it, Dinah just hadn't been ready for the revelations that came with her kidnapping and what Harry had told her about that empath knowing who was in love. It had been a lot easier to enjoy falling for him when she hadn't realized that it was happening.
