She took the empty sugar container and scootched from her seat, walking to the only other occupied table in the entire diner, which was clear across the room. There sat one very irritated nurse in scrubs. The words they exchanged could not be heard from the table where George's oatmeal sat untouched. Though the nurse looked annoyed, the two eventually exchanged sugar containers. It only occurred to the nurse afterward that George could have taken a sugar jar from any of the unoccupied tables.
George returned to her oatmeal and placed the new and nearly full sugar container on the table. Then, without saying another word, proceeded to eat her oatmeal without adding even an ounce of the sugar she'd gone out of her way to get.
