Oy was no daemon, but the billy-bumbler was ka-tet. In a very real way, he and Jake shared a soul. They were bound together in very much the same sense, which showed when the pair tilted their heads in confusion, at the exact same angle, at the exact same time.
Then Jake let out a small laugh. "His name is Oy," the boy said, only the slightest emphasis on the pronoun. The bumbler in question wagged his tail, barking out his echo of his name. "Oy!" Then Oy poked his nose against Jake's arm. "Ake! Ake! Oy!"
Jake nodded, rubbing the spot Oy liked, behind his ears. "I'm Jake." He extended a hand, remembering his manners. "Nice to meet you, sai."
