Simon listened to her and once more found himself smiling. It was a strange school boy smile that Kaylee made him feel. How could he not? She was just so good and adorable, even if she did like living on the equivalent of a pirate space ship. He wondered sometimes how Mal could willingly let her go out in to the Black when it was so unsafe...
"I understand." Simon nodded. "I was doing the same. Looking for the crew and other people I knew." Simon looked around, not sure what to say now. He didn't like being awkward, and he didn't like being awkward around Kaylee. He got the distinct impression that at one time he wasn't.
"Wait." It finally sunk in. "You were in the hospital?" He stepped closer, his hands already out to touch her face and shoulder. "What happened? Did you get hurt? Are you okay?" His fingers, if she didn't step away, would be brushing back her hair, just a little pet. The other hand would now be just under her jaw. "Do we need to take you to the hospital, get you looked over?"
Simon still felt very responsible for Miss Kaywinnit Lee Fry's life.
