He was sorry he had brought up her family. She tried to put on a brave front, but she obviously missed her family very much. Guy understood completely how a family’s fortune could turn practically over night. His own current position was caused by the loss of land and fortunes. He was able to muster up some sympathy for Beauty’s family.
“At least you were all able to stay together after you lost your ships,” he said, smiling at her. “Family is good to have in a time of crisis. I am sorry that they are no longer here for you.”
He let himself think about his own family. He had no idea where his sister was now. And he could hardly think of the sheriff as family. Only Marian came close. She had almost been his wife. He had almost had a family of his own.
“I have no one here, Beauty,” he said, answering her question. “A friend who helps take care of my cottage. There was someone here from my village, but she disappeared shortly after I arrived. It seems that people disappear from here without warning.” And possibly appear just as mysteriously.
He turned to smile at Beauty again. “Luckily, this City gives you the chance to meet some beautiful and charming people. It is possible that a few confusing events like this one may be worth the trouble if you meet someone you can take a nice ride with.
