Jeannie was thoroughly confused. The man said he was a wizard, even though he did not look at all like any wizard she had ever met, but then he said he would like to be a hero. Wizards were not heroes. Wizards were terrible people full of greed and lust for power and they were all kinds of sneaky. She did not think this man could sneak to save his life.
Then he confounded her even further by bowing, which was a very chivalrous and gentlemanly thing to do, to the girl. A girl she had met before. The rude dancing girl. Well, he could not know the girl was rude. And perhaps she had just been having a bad day. But the bow threw the djinn even further, because she had never met a single wizard that was gentlemanly, not even the rather benign few she had run across.
All of which left her with the conclusion that the thin man was not really a wizard at all, despite his claims. He just wanted to pretend he was important and thought that title would do the trick. Her theory was proven, at least in her eyes, when he offered to take care of the leprechaun and rather than use any sort of wizardly sneaky magics he punted the creature away.
The fact that she had found magical means less than effective herself and therefore he might have decided to forgo such useless actions himself did not even cross her mind. No, to her, it was proof that he was just a very sweet, albeit misguided young man, who wanted to be something he was not. And he confirmed that with his words. Occasionally useful.
She would have to have a talk with him about the sorts of people he was trying to emulate. He was much too nice to go around letting people think he was a wizard. But first, she wanted the leprechauns out of her master’s home, and away from the cabin. “I do not know why you are here, but if you want to be useful, you can help me get rid of these vile things.
“That leprechaun has much to answer for. Oh yes, he does,” she muttered as she turned to go back inside. There was absolutely no doubt in her mind whose fault this was. And when she found Sweeney, being doused in tomato sauce or mobbed by squirrels was going to be the least of his problems.
