Baba watched the taller leprechaun walk away, smiling. He didn't like the gift of adoration? He didn't seem to even like that he had others that were supposed to be like him. She wasn't going to follow him, not exactly. She motioned for one of the wee admirers to come closer.
"Gather a few friends, follow him, and report back to me. I believe he is the one you seek." It wasn't that Baba knew more than she let on, but a little magical nudge, especially with the City's own "magic," certainly made it appear so.
"Don't get in his way. But..." She grabbed the little man before he ran off to do what she said. Partly from the crone's compulsion, partly from the leprechaun's own - the City had certainly gotten something wrong in that - the little man was more than willing to follow his larger "brother." "If you're trying to impress him, if you want to show him he's the one, bring him things. He's like you. Bring him what you like, what you'd want. Leave him small gifts, build him a hoard here in this world."
It was a cruel thing to do, but if the City was going to create the opportunity, she was going to take it. Plus, the large man was probably magnificent when he was angry, or in his cups. She wanted to see just what the real leprechaun had in him.
