Jake continued to lick at the fish whilst the ladies continued their discussion about The City and how it worked. He hadn't quite figured it out himself, and he had been there for quite some time. He also had a good deal of mechanical and quantum education in his background. So, it didn't matter how smart of a person (or cat!) you were, The City worked on its own set of principles.
"The City has a mind of its own."
Jake looked up as Beauty excused herself from the table. He meant to say goodbye, but his mouth was full of fish, and he didn't want to get anymore on his whiskers.
He lapped up a little bit of cream from a bowl nearby.
When Remy asked what it was she was supposed to do now, Jake sat up, licked his paws, and said, "You go to work. Well, not now. Maybe tomorrow. You might be in a different place, but there are still people who need you. Every city needs doctors."
Then again, it might have been easier for Jake. He was a cat. A cat and an astronaut. He was used to living alone, traveling alone, being alone. So finding himself in The City was no big change. He actually kind of liked it.
