Hannibal didn't need a notepad. Everything was carefully stored away. He sorted through what she had said so far, but nothing seemed to disturb her quite as much as the loss of her name.
"Let's focus on that last bit, shall we? Your name. None of the IDs felt right. So what I want you to do is set those names aside. Put them in column A in your mind. These are the names you know don't belong to you. When you've done that, I want you to start going through other names. Ones that you didn't see in that pile, names you have heard other people called. Maybe names from books or movies. If they stick, even just a little bit, you place them in column B. You don't need to write this down, but if you think it would help, you can. There's a notepad on the table by you."
Lady Murasaki always kept notepads handy. She liked to write down little poems and thoughts she had through the day.
"When you feel that you have a good amount of names, then I want you to start reciting them out loud. Hopefully, with repetition, we'll be able to narrow things down to your actual name. It's not a short process, but it's better, I think, than hypnotism. More reliable. You'll be more sure of yourself. Once we have your name established, I think a lot of the other things will come much easier to you."
