Simon didn't jump when he heard the voice, but he did step to the side hoping to get a better look at whomever was talking. He knew who it was; the shepherd's voice was unmistakable, but Simon wanted to make sure. He took a deep breath and stepped into the building further. On some level he was surprised that he didn't get hit by lightning or burned to a crisp, as he hadn't been the kindest person to anyone's creatures. Then again, who really was in charge in the City? The City?
"I wanted to talk to you, and here you are. I didn't expect to find you, and in a church." He motioned to the building as if the shepherd needed to know what Simon was talking about; it was...awkward. "I didn't think you were here."
He looked down at his hand that had motioned stupidly to the building, closing it into a fist and shoving it in his pocket. Both hands were now in pants pockets. He was dressed more like those he saw in the City, not so much the young doctor who'd joined Serenity's crew seemingly so long ago.
"I almost wished I hadn't." He didn't want anyone stuck here; it wasn't the same as being on the ship, out in the Black. It wasn't the same at all; it meant being grounded, and Simon had come to terms with it, even if he did have to deal with very slow and often unreliable technology. He continued down the aisle a little but stopped before passing the third pew from the back. He wasn't sure how Book would take his comment, and quickly realized he probably should clarify. "Not that I'm unhappy to see you, but this isn't the place we're used to, which probably sounds a little ridiculous and crazy to do you, depending on how long you've actually been here."
