“Yeah, they are,” Harley grinned, a wide and bright expression of unabashed happiness and pride. She knew her babies were not making the best showing compared against the stoic, regal wolf behind the kid, but then the girl would be biased to think her companion was better anyway. To Harley, the wolf, while neat enough in his own way, was a little too… stuffy. Which was a really weird thing to think about a wild animal, but she couldn’t shake the impression that she was being judged and found wanting.
That never sat well with Harley.
She much preferred the openess and unpredictability of her hyenas. They kept life interesting, and when she called them, they came to her. That’s all she really asked of them. Well, that, and not to throw up in her boots. They were still working on that second thing.
Still, they were great pets, great friends, and Harley adored her babies. “They’re smarter than you think. They’ve saved my ass more than once. Their jaws can break bones, y’know. Ya got a guy holding a knife to you’re throat and he hears the snap of one of his guys having his arm bit through? Makes him all shakey, throws him off, gives you an advantage.”
Harley nodded, turning her smile on Lou with loving affection. “Besides. They need me.”
Giving herself a little shake, Harley pulled herself back to the conversation they’d been having. They got a little off-track, but that’s because she allowed Firekeeper to take control of the converstation. Sorta pitiful, since she had a rudimentary vocabulary. Harley’d feel bad, but there was only so far you could push a person in a session. “So, hey? If I wanted to run into you again, where’d I find you? You got a place you’re staying?”
