Harley nodded, and noted that she’d said Firekeeper twice. The other name was added mostly as an afterthought, so it was obvious which she preferred. Though Harl couldn’t figure out why. If she was lady anything, she’d be making people call her that all the time, let alone Lady Blissful Whatever. That was pretty. But if the kid liked her hippy name, then that was cool with Harley. It wasn’t like she didn’t know lots of people with a secret identity.
When she introduced her pet wolf, Harley jerked her thumb over her shoulder at the hyenas. “Bud and Lou. Bud is the big guy. They’re my babies.”
Which probably didn’t answer the question the kid was asking. “They’re spotted hyenas. They’re from Africa. They look a little like your friend there. Blind Seer. But they’re not canids, they’re actually related to things like mongooses and meerkats. The spotted ones, like Bud and Lou, have a matriarchal society, so I’m the big boss. Helps keep ‘em in line, but sometimes they’re a little rude. They can’t help it, they got no manners and they don’t want to learn.”
Her chin jerked toward the wolf, and she asked, “You can talk to him? Or are you just making that up. That he thinks they insulted him?”
She was dying to know if the kid really thought she could talk to the animal. Because she’d always wondered if Catwoman could talk to her little pets, like they were minions, or what. That would be kind of a cool thing to do. Bud and Lou, they were smart, they listened to her, but she didn’t really get any answers back. Most of the time, she guessed what they wanted, and it was right, but to actually talk… well, maybe not with her babies. They’d probably never shut up.
