The title in itself was so out of place in The City, Book didn’t even register the voice that spoke it. Odd enough that anybody’s call to him in this neighborhood, too. Wasn’t exactly a friendly sort of place. But surprise overrode caution and he turned to see who might be calling for him.
Then stopped dead.
A heartbeat later, a smile, genuine, friendly and relieved, lit up his entire face. It was like sunshine breaking through clouds. His feet were taking him toward her before he’d even told them to, everything in him just so purely, completely happy to see a familiar face. After his talk with Jesse, it was a balm to the soul.
“No one can tell me there aren’t miracles, I’m looking at one,” he greeted her without preamble. “Because it is a blessing to see a friendly face in this place. Zoe.”
He was almost at her side when it occurred to him that if he was here, and she was here, it was possible the rest of the Serenity crew was here. Seemed a bit brusque to just ask outright though, before she’d even had a chance to say hello.
