They did it with expert timing [Harry, Wes, Fred, and anyone who wants Chinese food]
(Continued from here and here)

"Here." Harry wasn't getting a choice. The Chinese place appeared out of the blue, which oddly didn't comfort the ex-first mate much; she was getting that "this is a set up" feeling.

It seemed like a popular place, or at least there were other people entering. Zoe caught sight of them as they slipped inside, thinking that that pair were either very good actors or they were walking into a very dangerous situation. Either way, Zoe supposed that living up to her Big Damn Hero self-title was one way to get back into the swing of things.

"Tung-Ching?" There was a soft sound as she thought of the name. "That's if you'd rather have something else. I know they've got a place that's supposed to be from the future - it's not, just supposed to be."

Zoe shrugged, stepping up to catch the door. She had no problem with men opening doors for her, but she was closer so why wait for chivalry? Zoe tended to be the knight in well-used armor rather than the silly damsel in distress; waiting for a knight took too long.

Wes had just sat down across the table from Fred and lifted the menu up. The choices looked good and the smells wafting out of the kitchen were amazing. The day was going spectacularly.

And then the door opened.

His eyes widened and he ducked behind the menu, carefully peering out from behind the red and white paper.

Dear God, it couldn't be. She couldn't be here too. That would just be a horrible practical joke.

Fred was happy, or as happy as she could be until she got some food in her stomach. She hadn't been asked to solve any difficult math probs as of late, and some part of her wanted to feel useful. Actually all of her wanted to feel useful, but that was a different story.

The brainy girl had been looking through the menu, oblivious to the possible threat that entered the little resturaunt. Then again, this Fred had never met that threat. Wrong bits of Winifred Burkle's timeline. Fred blinked as she noticed finally that Wes looked so cute doing the hide behind the menu bit; of course, she didn't think this would be the type of Wes who'd do that...

"Uhm..Wes?"

Wes practically hissed between his teeth.

"I...um...she just reminded me of someone I know, that's all. Someone I know...and don't like very much. No, not very much at all. You met her, well....future you....it's complicated. Suffice it to say, the world was at stake and we won, but it wasn't good. Anyways, it can't be her. Can't. Can't. Really."

Staring back at the menu, he cleared his throat and said, rather a little too loudly, "So, should we order one moo-shu beef to share and one other dish to share?"

"Who is she?" Fred looked from Wes to the tall attractive woman and back again. Sure, the woman looked as if she could cause some damage, but Fred didn't think she seemed like anything to be feared. Her voice lowered, which meant she had to lean in to him. Actually, she had to scoot her chair a little over, just to be closer without having to be loud. "What did she do?"

Fred sat up with the clearing of the throat. "Well, we could share. Or we could get two different things and share. That'd be fun. That way we could try something brand new too?" Her voice matching his in level.

He reached for the door a second too late and watched as she opened it herself. He entered the restaurant and tried to keep up. He had a feeling he'd be doing that a lot with her.

He took a deep breath and nearly groaned at the smell. It was so good and made him realize just how hungry he was. He glanced around the place, looking for a table and that's when he saw the guy in glasses practically glaring daggers at them...no, her. He was watching Zoe with a look of horror on his face.

He reached over to tap her shoulder. "Hey...you know that guy?" He asked curiously.

Zoe hadn't taken much notice, or more she wasn't being obvious about the noticing. Sometimes it worked better if you pretended that no one wanted you dead - certainly had helped her in the past. But, Dresden had decided to point the guy out. They were the same couple she thought she'd seen going in earlier.

"Doubt it." Her mind was already working through any possible enemies. Of course, she supposed he could have been slighted at sometime in her youth, yet she would probably have remembered...maybe.

"He doesn't look ...right." He didn't have the look of any mercenary/smuggler she knew, and he didn't even seem to be from her own time. Then again, she probably didn't look all that much from the future either.

"Maybe he knows you?"

"Uhh, I'm pretty sure he is looking at you." He nodded. He watched him talk to the woman he was with. He knew he'd better be ready, no matter what happened, and he started gathering his focus toward his shield bracelet around his wrist.

He nodded. "I know what you mean." And then he looked back at her. "But I have no idea who he is and he is most definitely looking at you like you ran over his puppy or something."

"I didn't run over anyone's puppy - I've got no qualms with those of the canine persuasion." Zoe's eyes narrowed slightly, and she thought she'd try something that seemed to work for Inara - a smile. Could she help it if it looked like that benevolent peaceful all-loving/caring smile that Wes might have seen on a face very similar to hers?

"Maybe the City's scrambled something for him." She reached over and nudged Dresden on his way. The "magician" seemed to be okay on a street corner, but she wasn't sure this guy could or would fight, which meant she put herself between him and stink eye Jones.

"Com'on." Unfortunately, the only table that was free was the one right beside Mr. Stink Eye. "This'll be a treat," a murmur that might have summed up a good many of Zoe's mealtime outings.

Everyone jump into this?

Wes swallowed hard and sat up straight in his chair. It wasn't her. She would have done something.....hellgod-like by now. But she was still a tall, capable-looking woman and he wasn't going to talk about her above a low murmur.

"She just reminds of a former Big Bad. No big deal. It isn't her, I was obviously mistaken. Let's stop starting at her before she....oh, they're coming over here. Fantastic."

Smiling at Fred and trying not to turn his head to follow the two as they walked to the table next to him and sat down, he addressed Fred's louder words. That was a safer topic.

"I think sharing two different things would be good. And maybe some appetizers to share too. Or soup for both of us? How about the moo-shu beef and , um.....orange duck. Now you pick some appetizers, ok?"

He knew Fred's appetite...and his own. They were going to need more food than just two entrees.

"Big bad? She doesn't look very Big Bad. She looks like she could hurt someone, but she looks nice? Well, maybe not nice, well, she can smi-" Fred's little babble about the not so Big Bad cut off as soon as she too noticed they were walking over. The brain was doing her best not to be obvious, and her mind was quickly trying to figure out what this woman could have done.

"Did she break your heart?" Well, the warrior looking woman was pretty enough. "Is that what's going on?"

Fred couldn't hide the bit of disappointment. It wasn't that she wanted Wes single, but it was. Her lips thinned as she tried to figure out that little bit of illogic, and she shrugged looking at the menu.

"Soup! Yes. And maybe some eggrolls? Vegetable ones. And some dumplings?" Fred laughed nervously, wondering if she sounded like a pig yet. "Oh, sorry. Can we afford to get all that?"

Harry followed her over to the table and sat down. He listened to the table next to them peruse the menu rather loudly. Clearly not one to be prolong awkward situations he leaned over with a smile.

"Excuse me." He asked. "We've never been here before. Can you recommend something for us?"

Zoe didn't hide the smile as Dresden decided to speak with the pair; yeah, he was crazy like the rest of them, and for a brief moment, the warrior woman felt at home. It might not have been difficult to find the insane in the City, but Zoe had grown accustom to a certain type of insanity - the kind that could get her into a fight that she had a decent chance of winning. Really, how difficult could it be to fight these two?

"I don't know. I think soup is always a good choice, and dumplings. Think they have bao?" The Amazon looked over at the pair, brow raised, but her attention was turned quickly to the menu that someone was kind enough to place in front of her.

"Dim sum?"

Wes pasted a smile on face and turned to face the intimidating pair. She was just too close to Jasmine for comfort, and the man practically radiated "Look at me! I'm a wizard! I can do magic!" Wes had his own little tricks, but he was really more on the theoretical side of things. He could help you fix a spell more easily than he could do it alone. He was great at working in concert, though. Maybe he could eventually persuade the man to discuss his workings and methods. Maybe.

"Well, we've never been here before but we said we wanted authentic Chinese and this what the City produced. This seems to be more in the Szechuan style than Mandarin or Cantonese, but I like the spice."

Raising an eyebrow at the lady's comments, he managed to say relatively naturally, "I haven't had a chance to actually see any of the food but the smells from the kitchen are fantastic. I'm no chef, so I'm content to let those who work here guide my choices. Do you have particular favorites, ma'am? My name is Wesley, by the way and my lovely companion is known as Fred. May we have the pleasure of making both of your acquaintances?"

Fred didn't seem to care what kind of Chinese they were about to have, as long as it was good. Sometimes she didn't even care if it was good; good was a plus, seeing as she once tried to mix and match bits of greenery in attempt to find her comfort foods. Nothing comforting about a bark taco, well, maybe for a beaver or most definitely a termite.

"Spice is good. So is food in general." Fred's hand lifted to give a quick wave for the introduction. She was certainly getting a funny vibe about the group, but it could have been a simple reaction to Wes - he was acting fun. Or maybe not so funny. He seemed very much like the Wes she knew.

"You can join us!" A quick glance at Wes, maybe that wasn't exactly what he was going for, but the more the merrier, specially if the more weren't bad guys who've come to kill them while they were..eating.

Harry nodded, he liked this girl already. "We'd love to join you." He scooted his chair over to their table unceremoniously. "I'm Harry, by the way. Harry Dresden." He gave them a winning smile, or what he thought was a winning smile, sometimes he didn't come across quite so charming as he wished. He nodded for Zoe to come on over too. Weren't they just one big happy family now.

Zoe's eyes narrowed slightly as she watched the wizard settle down at a new table. It wasn't so much that she was antisocial, but she wasn't sure she was all that in a hurry to make that many new friends. With a shrug, she stood, claiming whatever had been put down at their table - no reason to waste more utensils and such. She set down everything that had been theirs before settling down at the table as well.

"Zoe." No last name given quite yet. Well, it didn't seem to matter. "I've always been partial to a nice pass the plate - partial to real food in general." Her eyes were fixed on the menu with that last bit, but they lifted quickly when Fred gave a laugh and apologized for it. The almost frail looking woman understood the desire for "real" food all too well, even if it was for different reasons.
