The Interview [Veronica]
The newspaper ad red like this: WANTED. Receptionist for private investigation firm. If interested please submit resume in person to the offices of Angel Investigations. In a city where the roads constantly shifted, no address was necessary. Unfortunately the pool of applicants were reduced entirely to whomever The City decided to present.

Veronica had seen the ad, but she wasn't sure that she should respond to it. She didn't plan on being here long, but the days had passed and she was still in the city so she decided to reply. She didn't have high hopes or anything. She was sure that the job would have plenty of applicants. Still, she had to do something and she had experience with that.

Her father wouldn't like it of course, he'd always wanted something more for Veronica. But it was a job and it would have to do for now, if she got it, that was.

She arrived earlier than she'd anticipated because the line for coffee was much shorter than she thought it would be. She looked around a little for the person who ran this place.

"Hello?"

Angel, not realizing he had an audience, walked into the office holding his cell out with both hands pushing buttons at random with his thumbs as if battling some small cursed object.

"Stupid mail. Why can't they stick to paper? Yes, I want to listen to my messages you--"

The paranormal investigator blinked when he noticed the petite blonde. He quickly tossed the small offending phone behind his shoulder and wore a surprised smile.

"Hi. Can I help you?"

Veronica couldn't help but smirk to herself as he did battle with the tiny technological item. He didn't seem old enough to be a Luddite, so admittedly, it was a little strange to see.

"Hi." Veronica greeted him, trying not to make too obvious that she'd seen and heard everything. "You posted an ad for a receptionist?" She asked, someone here had and she had to make sure he was the right person. Angel Investigations, sounded like a born again Christian firm or something. Still, all skepticism aside, Veronica needed something to do.

"I'm Veronica Mars." She introduced herself and offered her hand, as she looked up at him. He dwarfed her by at least a foot, but she was more than used to that.

"Angel," he said, stepping forward to offer a hand. The former vampire didn't make any assumptions about the girl, he'd known too many petite blondes more than capable of taking care of themselves.

"It's nice to meet you, Veronica. If you don't mind my asking how old are you? It's just that you seem a little young to be..."

Angel. So that was where the name came from. Veronica noted that he was pretty pale, which was strange, though she hadn't met too many people here yet so maybe everyone was so pale. She shouldn't make these kinds of judgments yet.

"I"m 18." She said. She could show ID if he asked for it, of course she had IDs that said she was 22 and 24 as well so it didn't really matter. "I worked for my dad, as a receptionist." She explained quickly, handing over her resume. "I also helped solve my best friend's murder." And the bus crash, and numerous other things but she wouldn't need to mention it all, likely.

It would probably be hard enough for him to believe her, since she was so young. Most teenagers weren't involved with private investigations and danger. But Veronica was hardly like most teenagers.

"I'm sorry about your friend," he said sympathetically. Angel hadn't been in The City long and it was winter. He had time to work on his new ability to get a tan.

"The ad is for a receptionist. The type of cases Angel Investigations take are a little unusual. So, I'm sure your very smart but you'd mostly be answering phones, sending out invoices, office management, chatty box emaily things..."

Technology and a two-hundred plus former vampire did not go together.

"Thanks." Veronica said. She missed Lilly everyday. It was so hard without her.

"I can do all that." Veronica told him. That of course did not mean that she wouldn't get into her own fair amount of trouble. As long as days ended in y, Veronica would find some way to get into trouble.

"I can make pretty good coffee too." She had worked at Java the Hut for awhile, though that had mostly been as a hostess and not a barista.

Angel paused to look down at her resume. Her dad was a private investigator. That sounded promising. He looked up from the paper to the blonde.

"Do you have any experience with sword fighting, rocket launchers, demonic languages, latin incantations, ritual spell casting or curses?"

He looked serious when he asked.

Veronica looked stunned for a moment, before she shook her head and answered. "I've seen the Exorcist about 50 or so times, and House of Wax scares the crap out of me, due to Paris Hilton." She shrugged, before continuing.

"I've been in a refrigerator set on fire and was tortured with my own taser." That had to count for something, right?

Angel frowned.

"I ask because none of that is in the job description. If you run into trouble, even burning refrigerator trouble, your job will be to either get to safety or call for help."

He paused.

"You carry a taser?"

"I can handle it." Veronica said. She was tougher than she looked, sort of anyway.

"Of course. My dad wouldn't have it any other way. Usually I have Backup too."

"Handle it as in the trouble, or handle it as in staying clear from trouble? See this is where the job description comes in. I don't want you you to handle trouble. I want you to handle staying away from trouble."

Angel massaged his brooding forehead.

"The taser is fine as long as when you use it you're one hundred percent sure what you're using it on is human. The voltage probably isn't high enough to handle a vampire or demon."

He looked up and made eye contact: "What's a Backup?"

Fred was in a good mood. Sort of. She hadn't seen anyone other than Angel since the whole zombie trouble. Well, Angel and Jesse - Jesse was a nice surprise, but he was a new friend, not an old one. She was a little concerned about her old friends; she bet she could get Angel to find them with her.

So, to sort of sweeten the deal, she had grabbed some of the best tacos she could find. Of course, she had to hope that they'd stay warm for her walk home, and she was pleasantly surprised to find that the City let her get back to the office before anything got cold.

"Angel! I have something for you!" Yeah, that sounded right.

"Fred this is Veronica, she's interested in the receptionist position. Veronica, Fred. Fred works here, too. ...You are working here, right?"

Angel hadn't actually asked, he'd just assumed. Though his senses weren't what they were, he sniffed the air carefully.

"...Are those tacos?"

He beamed a little.

"Hi Fred." Veronica said pleasantly enough. She could make nice sometimes. She smiled at the other girl.

She turned to Angel, shaking her head. "I'll try to stay out of trouble." She said. "And Backup is my dog. An overprotective pitbull." But he wasn't here, and Veronica missed him already.

"Oh. Hi." Fred hadn't known she'd be meeting someone, or she'd have brought more food. As it was, she'd be lucky to have bought enough for the two of them. "I'm Fred, but he already said that."

She handed the bag over to Angel, smiling.

"Tacos. They're pretty good. I watched them fix them, that's always fun. I didn't know if you wanted sour cream or if you wanted soft or hard shell, so I got some of both. I forgot the drinks, but we could check the fridge for some. Sometimes the City does that. You can have a taco if you want," Fred smiled at Veronica; the blonde didn't know how nice Fred was being right then.

As she passed Angel, she gave him a little half hug.

"I guess I can work here." Fred smiled, teasing him a little.

Angel pulled a hard shelled taco from the bag wrapped in wax paper. "We could get a dog. I mean the lease says no pets but if it's for security then that's completely different, isn't it? I mean it's not as if there's an evil law firm here to blow the place up so a dog shouldn't be that big of a deal..."

Angel pulled back the paper and looked slightly tentative before taking a bite. He chew thoughtfully. Spicy Mexican goodness assaulted his mouth and he brightened considerably.

"MMM. Mmmmm."

Chew! Chew! Chew! Swallow.

"Now this is good."

If he looked like he'd never eaten a taco before it was because he hadn't.

"Thanks." Veronica said. That was pretty nice of her possible soon to be co-worker. She seemed quirky, and Veronica was vaguely reminded of Mac. She guessed she'd be getting to know the woman if she ended up working here.

"I wouldn't want another dog." She told Angel. She missed Backup too much to want another dog. "It's cool, I'll be careful, I promise." Which was not to say that she would not get into trouble, because she probably would.

She watched Angel with a strange look as he woofed down the taco. It was like he'd never eaten it before.

"Uhm, Angel, slowly. You don't want to choke." Fred shook her head, smiling softly. She knew the draw of tacos; she knew it very well. She also knew how quickly she'd put down a few tacos when they'd gotten back to L.A.

"Dogs are nice." Fred smiled as she saw the fridge; this was such a different place. It made her miss the Hyperion.

"Okay. Well, I found some water." She wasn't going to pull or point out what else was in there. Did he know there was blood in there? She offered him the bottle of water she'd found.

"So, receptionist?"

Angel paused to think about dogs. Dogs weren't so bad, were they? Then his mind flashed to Holtz and his men hunting him with Darla through rural Europe chased nightly by large hounds.

"...I think we can pass on the dog."

Angel tried to pace himself as he finished his taco.

"I'm good with whatever." Veronica said. She was qualified, so she'd showed up here. If she got it, that was cool. If not, that was fine too. She just thought she'd try.

"I just miss my own dog, that's all."

"I've never been a receptionist. I've been a teachin' assistant, but that didn' last a long time. I've worked for Angel, sorta. Didn' get much money, but I had a place to stay. He let me live with him. That was fun when we weren't runnin' for our lives." Fred smiled, breaking out some more of the tacos.

"We get some interestin' clients. Which, sorta reminds me. I need help findin' some friends." Fred claimed a chair and started in on one of the soft shell tacos, making little happy sounds as she did so.

"I get that," Angel said empathetically. He missed his dragon.

"...What friends are we looking for?"

Angel offered one of his tacos to Veronica before starting on a second. He reached from the desk and tossed Veronica a pen and pad of paper. This might require writing. As the new receptionist, Veronica would need to write things.

Fred looked from Veronica to Angel. Well, this was certainly different; she'd never been a client before; she was usually the one helping rather than getting help. She took a few more bites, giving Veronica time to get the laptop out. She didn't even ask Angel for a sip of water, just took it. Then again, usually he wasn't the one drinking the water.

"Uhm...Pietro...Maxi..no, Lehnsherr. Sam...I donno Sam's last name. He's tall, really tall. Taller than Groo. Not bigger than, just taller." She took a few more bites and a little sip of water. "Wes. We need to find Wes. I guess there aren't that many people I need to find. But, I'd like to know if a girl is around. Cassie. I haven't seen her in a while. And Barbara Gordon. She worked at the library. Bruce Banner. Violet, she probably needs to be checked on." Fred was working through the names of the people she'd met.

"I guess I haven't really met too many people. And Norman. You should check on Norman, Angel."

Veronica was trying to keep up with everything the woman was saying, when her laptop was all booted up. She managed to get it, but it was pretty much an assortment of thoughts more than anything else.

"Telekinetic powers?" Was he kidding? Then again if there were vampires and demons...

Fred blinked. She even paused in opening up another taco, thinking.

"I don't know if he was telekinetic; he never said anything, or did anything. He's got a brother. I never met his brother Dean, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had guns. Sam smelled like..gunpowder. Like he was a hunter or somethin'. He certainly dresses like one." Fred wracked her brains for anything more.

"I'd say he's about 6'2" or 6'3". Has brown hair, sorta longish, but it works for him. Big green brown eyes. Nice smile when he smiles. Big hands. Really big hands. He could probably palm a basketball. Uhm...his brother's a mechanic!" Yeah, she was being helpful. "Was your telekinetic zombie named Sam?"

Her eyes widened. "Did you kill him? You didn't kill him, did you?" What if it was her..well, not her Sam, but the Sam she was hoping to find.

Angel thought about commenting on Fred's very crush-like choice of words but wisely refrained.

"He's fine. My ribs are still bruised because of him, but he's fine. After he was cured some random girl took him to the hospital."

Angel turned to Veronica and without so much as a you're hired said: "Why don't you get the names and descriptions from Fred, call the hospital, I think there's a zombie hotline, too."

It wasn't really a case if all that was required to track Fred's friends involved a few phone calls.

"You can use your lap computer to look up the numbers, right?"

Zombies?

Just what are you getting yourself into here, Mars?

"Will do." She told Angel without hesitating. She hoped this worked out, or she was going to be very bored here. Her detecting skills could be put to good use here, but she could deal with being just a receptionist for now.

"It's called a power book and I can look up almost anything." She could also falsify documents and tail cars but he hadn't asked about that yet.

Fred relaxed a little, hearing that Sam, if it was Sam, was okay. She looked at Veronica then back at Angel.

"I could call the hotlines, but I don't know if they'll give us any information. I know that most zombies were bein' taken to the Hospital. I could prolly go ask some questions." Fred nodded, thinking.

"Angel, will you talk to Norman? Carefully? I think he might need a male friend. Not that you have to be his friend, but maybe you could look like you weren't gonna kill him for maybe bein' a psycho?" Angel had been a psycho once, so he'd understand, right? He could help Norman maybe?
