Out on the town. (Zoe)
After the initial shock of being dropped into a strange place, alone and without most of his traveling gear, Schmendrick had decided that the City was not, in fact, such a horrible place. He could handle this: he wasn't happy about it, mind you, but he didn't panic or get angry the way he might have, once upon a time. He had his wits, and he could form a plan. Someone was sure to know of a way home. He'd just ask around.

It had proved harder than expected. No one seemed to know where Hagsgate was, and when he'd explained that he wanted to get home, they gave him pitying looks. He wasn't the first one to have been in this situation, it seemed.

So, Schmendrick set up temporary arrangements. He'd found a key to an apartment in his pocket, and while the idea of living in a compartment half the size of Haggard's kitchen didn't really appeal, it was shelter. Schmendrick had never been one to turn up his nose at free shelter. Or food.

Food was going to be slightly harder to come by. He'd had no idea that he ought to look in the refrigerator, because he had no idea what a refrigerator was. So, instead, he'd taken to the nearest street corner to do magic for coin or food. It was humiliating, but let it not be said that Schmendrick refused to embarrass himself in the pursuit of a good meal.

At the moment, three balls were busy juggling themselves. It was a simple enchantment, but it wasn't working entirely to plan. As Schmendrick reached into his pocket for something to transfigure, one of the juggling balls whalloped him hard, against the side of his head. The other two followed suit. WHAM. WHAM. Suddenly they were busy boxing his ears, which was decidedly not what he'd intended when he'd muttered the sing-songy spell.

"OW." Schmendrick hissed, lifting his hands to protect his skull. The balls abruptly dropped, one knocking him soundly on the crown as it fell. They hit the pavement and scattered, rolling off in all directions.

Zoe had been one of the curious onlookers. It wasn't everyday she saw someone juggle balls without touching them. She had seen some guy who had figured out how to make really good holographs, but this just wasn't the same. And, like the rest of the crowd, she smiled as the poor clown was pelted with his own toys. That was how it worked, wasn't it? You laugh at the clown because he was there to laugh at. Her smile flattened as she knew she had to find her husband, but the City kept him wherever he was. It certainly wasn't letting her find her way to Serenity just yet.

Her brows furrowed as things went from amusing to worse. She stepped in to help the poor clown find his toys. The warrior woman was going soft, and maybe being landed was turning her so. Maybe it was a good thing, maybe it was a bad thing, or maybe it simply was.

"You know, most people would find the juggling all by itself good." She dipped into her pockets for some paper money. "Isn't it cold to be playin' dress up?"

The smiles and laughter weren't foreign to Schmendrick, though he thought he was supposed to be past all of this, now. The botched spellwork made him from briefly, but then his expression flickered back to neutral. He offered the gathered crowd a winning smile, swept a quick bow, and then went about trying to gather the offending juggling balls.

Zoe's question caught him somewhat off-guard. The magician straightened, one of the balls in hand, and blinked at her. "My dear lady," he responded, "I am Schmendrick the Magician! This is no costume; this is attire befitting a wizard of my stature." A pause. Then, "Which is to say, just over six feet."

Hey. Even when things went wrong, it paid to have a sense of humor.

Zoe stared at him, then smiled softly. She could smile, and did smile; Wash was more responsible for that than anyone would know. She tossed him one of the balls she'd gathered. The second one followed quickly enough; she had a feeling he'd be able to catch it without too much trouble. The way she tossed it, it was easy and slow - it wasn't meant as a way to pummel the guy and make him fumble again.

"Schmendrick the Magician? A wizard?" The Amazon laughed softly, shaking her head. "You're the second wizard I've met here, but I haven't seen the other in a while. He didn't dress like you, didn't juggle either that I know of."

Her now empty hands buried themselves in her coat. Her trudge through the snow had produced the mare's leg, which was definitely a good thing. And at least a blade that was tied to her boot.

"A magician, if we're being technical, but I don't mind the 'wizard' label." Schmendrick admitted, sketching another bow once he had all three juggling balls in hand. This one was solely for Zoe. "You wouldn't, ah, know how I got here, would you? At first I thought I'd taken a wrong turn in the forest, but I've never seen a city quite like this."

"No. Donno how anyone gets here. I was...working," Zoe had to fill in what she'd been doing exactly with another word. Most people wouldn't like to know that she was committing a crime at the time she found herself here. "So, I'm not really sure."

She looked over his dress; they looked like something an Alliance clerk's idiot uniform. Really, it seemed a bit much, but she supposed if it was necessary...

"The City's a bit..different from any city I've been in. You're good with those balls."

"I've had many, many years of practice." The way Schmendrick said it, it was as if he was a little rueful. He glanced down at the juggling balls before tucking them into a pocket inside the robe.

"It's not a bad City, mind you. If I knew what was going on, I'm sure I'd think it was a lovely city. But I don't, so I'm having trouble, ah. Appreciating it properly."

"It's not a lovely city. You can't go anywhere. You're stuck here. Can't break atmo." Zoe's eyes lifted to the sky; sometimes it bothered her, not being able to come and go as she pleased.

"It gives you what you want or need. What it thinks you need anyway. Sorry." She looked back at him, and gave him a rough pat on the shoulder.

"Atmo?" Schmendrick asked, perplexed, but moved on almost immediately. Zoe had said something far more important, namely:

"Stuck? And teleportation spells don't work?" He looked hopeful for a moment, before he realized it was a foolish question. She wouldn't know; Zoe wasn't a magician. The pat on the shoulder shook his frame, mainly because he went with it, hunching his back a little. Sigh.

"I can only hope the City has more sense than a person; 'what it thinks you need' sounds kind of... ominous. I've only met one creature that I'd trust to 'know best,' and even then."

"Atmosphere." Zoe explained with one word; it was all that was needed. She pulled her coat a little tighter, and looked more than a little confused at the teleportation question, but she wasn't going to get into it. For all she knew, he might be able to do it, whatever it was.

"The City does as it wants. Why are you busking anyway?" She didn't think the City would make anyone do it, but as she'd just said, the City did as it wanted.

"Bus--" Schmendrick started, then waved the question away with a hand. He didn't need to know the word to get the gist of what she was asking. "For food and coin, my dear lady. Unless there's some kind soul around who'd be willing to feed a magician for free - I know they exist, but in my experience, people want the magic show first. And, if I'm going to have to do a few tricks, I'd rather do them on the street, where a lot of people can enjoy it."

"Food and coin...lady?" Zoe wasn't amused by the term; most ladies she'd known were nothing like her. Inara might have been the only "lady" she knew that she could stand for long, or even respect. The others...

The Amazon pulled her coat tighter as she looked at the tall magician, wizard, whatever he was supposed to be. She didn't want to be responsible for yet another person, but she couldn't leave him out in the cold.

"The City is willing to do most of the looking after; don't know why you'd need to work. You have a roof? Some place to stay, yes? Food is easy enough, just go to a store, usually you'll find the money you need in your pocket."

"I have a roof," Schmendrick confirmed. "There was a key, I can only assume that I'm supposed to stay there." He lifted a hand to smooth the hair at the back of his head, but it wasn't having any of it. Dark tufts stuck every which way.

"Well. Money in the pocket, you say? That's some magic, for certain. I'll have to give it a try. And -- you wouldn't happen to know what people do with themselves, if they don't have to make a living? I'd like to be of some use while I try to find a way home."

Zoe nodded slightly at the key; well, that was one less thing she had to worry about. Her brow lifted slightly at the idea that money being in his pocket being magic. She supposed it was something like magic, more magic than she'd ever seen. Then again, she'd known some amazing pickpockets who could make it look like magic.

"I'm still looking for something to do. If you want a job bad enough, bet you could find something" She tried to smile. "I've been looking for a way out."

"A way out would be best. I'd be lying if I said that anyone back home needed me, but I'll miss them."

And that was the truth. Molly and the Unicorn were both self-sufficient. They'd gotten on before they'd known Schmendrick, and they'd get on now that he was gone. Didn't mean he didn't wish he could still see them, now and then.

"If you need a magician, I'm at your service. There's not much that one man can do, even with magic, but there you have it."

"Not sure what I'd need a magician for, but I'll keep you in mind. Name's Zoe Washburne if I didn't drop that earlier." She held out her hand, might as well make the meeting official.

"If you need help, or think of something that could be useful, you should let me know. Might not have magic, but I'm not bad in a pinch." She gave him a little more of a smile.

"A pleasure, Zoe Washburne." Schmendrick would've bowed again, but three times was a little bit of overkill, even for him. So, instead, he grinned and took a step back. "I'll let you know if I find anything. I've had a little experience with quests."

"I'll show you to a store, Sch..mendrick?" The magician. The name was a mouthful. Then again, it wasn't the worst name she'd heard in her travels.

"Then you can see if the..magic works." She motioned for him to come with her; it had to be better than trying to panhandle on such cold days like these. "You might want to get something a little warmer too."
