Off to see those allegedly responsible (Simon, Hannibal, Jennifer)
The smoothie had been just what the doctor ordered. A good cup of coffee would have done wonders too, but the banana-berry mix was good. So, the detective and the agent trudged through the snow to the Hospital.

Crews didn't seem to notice that the streets might be changing as they walked, probably because this was one of his first trips through the City. He didn't ask if they'd be there anytime soon; he just let his partner guide him along. They'd get there when they got there, and when they got there would be the right time for their arrival.

What Crew did notice were the festive decorations. Christmas had already come and gone for him, and he wasn't sure how he'd gotten back to Christmas, unless this really wasn't Christmas but instead some other winter holiday. It certainly looked a little Christmasy. His brows furrowed a little; his lips turned to a slight frown as he tried to remember what exactly he'd gotten Ted for the holidays. What had he gotten Reese? He hoped whatever he'd gotten they'd liked it.

"So, Dr. Lecter and Dr. Tam. Lecter sounds familiar. Are we playing good cop, bad cop? Crazy cop, good cop. Bad cop, bad cop?" There were a few more variations, but it was always good to have a decided style. Maybe. "This would have been easier if I could find my car. You think my car's here somewhere?"

"Doctor Lecter might sound familiar because he's the main character in a series of books. Silence of the Lambs. Red Dragon. Hannibal." Jennifer turned and looked at Crews, waiting to see if he would recognize any of it. If he came from a world where there was no Hannibal Lecter, he'd have to be filled in. A lot.

"I'm not sure how to play this, honestly." Jennifer looked at her feet as they walked for a little while and then sighed. "Listen, Charlie, I should tell you before we get there that Simon and I are... friends. I know I should probably pull myself off of the case, but there's nobody else available."

She wasn't sure how Simon was going to react to this. Not well, she suspected. Nobody ever reacted well to their possible flirty friend interrogating them in a professional manner.

"Your car is probably here somewhere. Your apartment, too. Or house, whatever. And if it's not, you can probably wish it into existence or something."

Jennifer was trying really hard to not be nervous about things. The part of her that liked Simon in a social way thought that maybe she should have given him a heads up. But the law enforcement side of her told her that would have been wrong. You didn't just tell the suspect you were coming and give them a chance to get away. Or hide things.

"There's the hospital." She nodded forward.

"Silence of the Lambs..." Crews took a sip of the smoothie, his mind on the possibility that they were going to meet a brilliant cannibal. "Simon? Tam? Friends? I could go in alone. Ask the questions. Do we have questions ready?"

Crews paused in front of the Hospital. It was an institution, and Crews wasn't fond of most institutions since his not so brief incarceration. He didn't like the smells and the colors. Thankfully the station had been large, new, and open. His new office now resembled something old, but used and refined. Nothing overly institutional - he'd still have preferred something larger.

"I'll have to look for it. Later." He squinted at the Hospital sign, nodding slightly. "Yep. It's a hospital. So, do they even know we're coming?"

It sounded to her like Crews knew about Hannibal Lecter. At least a little bit, anyway. "This Lecter is young. So don't be surprised by him. And don't underestimate him just because of his lack of age."

She'd read up all about him. He was far too brilliant for anybody's good. Frankly, he scared her a little bit. But she thought it was probably a good and healthy reaction to that sort of person.

"Yeah, Simon Tam. And you can't go in alone. I'd feel like shit heaving all of this on you. This is my job too. We were both assigned to it. We have to do this." It was more a pep talk to herself. Steeling herself for how Simon might react to her being there in an official capacity.

"No." Jennifer said, stepping toward the doors. "They have no idea we're coming."

She made her way to the front desk and showed her badge. She requested the whereabouts of Simon Tam and Hannibal Lecter and was told that Lecter was in his office. Simon would be paged and sent there. After getting instructions on how to get there, Jennifer waved her hand for Charlie to follow.

"They might be extra cranky. Apparently they were called into the head guy's office today already." It was a little bit funny. Not a lot. Just a little. She tried to picture Simon getting yelled at and the image she conjured amused her. Simon didn't seem like the kind of guy who would take such a thing easily.

There was a slight nod, his eyes narrowing as he thought. This was going to be interesting, or it was going to go horribly wrong. Either way, they'd learn something, even if it was just about themselves.

He nodded again as Jennifer told him about the two doctors and where they would meet them.

"It'll be difficult. When it's personal, it's always difficult." Yes, Crews just gave someone a straight answer. He wanted her to be ready, and he wanted to make sure he was being a good partner. In fact, he stopped her as they came to the door. "Are you sure you want to do this?"

Cranky wasn't the word for it. Simon'd just made it back to his office when a nurse stopped by to tell him that he was needed in Hannibal's. There wasn't a growl given in reply, but the nurse was quick to leave Dr. Tam alone when she got the look. It wasn't one too many people saw; in fact, the look was one that had been developed recently. Hannibal might have been the first to see it when Simon drugged him.

Folding his coat over his arm, he made his way to Hannibal's. The nurse hadn't said anything about the police. Nothing at all, or he might have hurried. No, instead he'd decided he'd make it there when he made it there. He didn't hurry, but he didn't slow his pace too much.

For all he knew, Hannibal wanted to start up the experiments again, and Simon, for the moment, was not in the mood for more experiments.

"I'm sure." Jennifer nodded. She found the right door and knocked. She wasn't just going to barge in, and she wasn't quite sure if offices worked on the same principals as apartments. Maybe she needed to brush up on laws better. She hadn't needed to deal with the questions of entrance before.

"Do you have any ideas of questions to ask?" She hoped he did. Otherwise they were going to be winging it. Winging it, and hoping Simon and Lecter didn't notice that. Jennifer wasn't really in the mood to be ripped apart by a mind so brilliant hers wouldn't even be in orbit around it if it was a planet.

Hannibal wasn't in anything nearing a good mood. He'd had to justify himself and his work to a man who wouldn't have understood it if the notebook had been placed in front of him. The bitter and elitist side of Hannibal was sure that even if he'd translated the whole thing into single syllable words, Wilson still wouldn't have grasped the concept that he and Simon had been after.

The monkey sat in the room, seemingly sad that nobody was paying much attention to it anymore. Every time Hannibal walked by the monkey reached out a little hand to try to grab a trailing piece of cloth.

Hannibal threw it a banana and paid it no further mind.

When the knock came, he stood reluctantly and moved to the door. Not wanting company at that moment. Not wanting to see anybody. Even Simon wasn't on his list of people he wanted to associate with. Not right now anyway.

But it wasn't anybody he knew. Certainly not doctors. Not nurses. Not hospital staff at all. His eyes caught one badge, two. Oh good. Badges. He could guess what they were here for.

"I suppose you should come in, then." He said, standing aside, allowing the pair entrance to the office.

Crews didn't get to answer the question; he really didnt' have a plan for questioning, not at the moment anyway. So, he just gave Jennifer his most reassuring smile, and when the door opened, he gave the same smile to Dr. Lecter. While Jennifer had warned him that Lecter was younger, he hadn't fully understood; Crews expected a younger Anthony Hopkins, not this guy. But, whatever Crews was really feeling, it didn't come through; he kept smiling.

"Hello, I'm Detective Crews; this is my partner, Agent Government. We'd like to ask you some questions." The detective could be straight forward when he wanted to be, and Crews didn't seem at all to mind that his partner might be a superior officer; actually, Reese had been his superior, too. It was all just really name and rank, things that only partially identified him as a person. "We'd like to wait for Dr. Tam to arrive. Usually we'd question you separately, but we'll keep this informal. Then again, how usual is talking to doctors who might have started a zombie invasion?"

Crews looked back at Jennifer as they entered the office, honestly asking the question. He didn't seem at all setting up the question to get a reaction from the "brilliant" Dr. Lecter. It was simply something that needed to be asked, at least for Crews. The detective didn't sit down just yet; he was going to wait to see if Jennifer would like to sit first, being a gentleman for the moment.

Jennifer passed through the doors, taking in everything that she could in the very short amount of time she had before she turned to face Hannibal Lecter again.

There was a monkey. There was a desk. Medical equipment, and a lot of books. There was another door, too. It looked like it went into a bigger office space. Seemed like a table in there with a white board, but she didn't catch much else than that.

She was very curious about the monkey and hoped Crews saw it and brought it up.

He was certainly blunt enough about everything else.

"We hear that you were called into the office of the Dean of Medicine. Care to tell us why?"

Hannibal watched the both of them. The male was a little bit strange. He'd said his name was Crews. The female was overly attentive. Government. What an odd name for an agent.

"Doctor Wilson decided he needed to establish his rank." Hannibal said simply. "He just got the job, and I suppose it's a normal thing to discuss current procedures with all of your employees. He made his opinion on certain matters clear."

They could ask Wilson if they wanted to know more than that. Hannibal didn't feel like talking about it.

His eyes moved over Agent Government again. "You have a very interesting tattoo, Agent Government. It appears to be a product barcode. Are all humans where you come from merely products? Or is it just the government agents?"

It was a little cruel, sure, but he felt put out, and didn't feel like holding his tongue.

"Barcode?" Crews' attention left the monkey to look at Jennifer. Right, he'd noticed it, but had felt that it was probably not something he needed to ask about. Kids did crazy things these days. "Oh, barcode. You have monkey. Is that normal, having monkeys? I'm new, as I'm sure you've noticed. I've not been to the hospital in a while. Did they change standards or add monkeys to the required...medical apparatus?"

Again he looked at Jennifer not Dr. Lecter. He was sure Lecter could answer, but this was how Crews worked. He sometimes deferred to his partner for an answer rather than getting the answer from the suspect.

"Are are you special? Think we could have a monkey for our office? Or maybe we should have a hamster? A police hamster! Maybe we shoudl have a dog. I had a horse once, but I had to give it up." Yes. This was Crews at his best.

Simon had caught the last little line of questioning as he approached. He didn't laugh, but he couldn't help the hint of a smile. This was who wanted to see him? Jennifer? Wait...

"Hannibal?" As if he was the one to call him here. Why would Hannibal call him if he was in a meeting? It wasn't like they wanted to spend that much time together right now. "Am I interrupting something?"

"I might be special." She told Charlie. Then looked back at Lecter. "It's a personal thing, if you really need to know." Jennifer didn't think he did, but ignoring the question wouldn't mean that he forgot about it. Better to just answer and have it be done with. "I don't think you really want a monkey in our office. If you want a pet, we can talk about that later."

Maybe a bird. A nice songbird. That might be nice.

She heard Simon's voice before she saw him, and turned to greet him. He wasn't going to be happy. He already didn't look amused by any of this. But it could have been his chat with Wilson that had done that, too. She didn't know. Hannibal certainly didn't seem very amused by that.

"Simon." She said, letting the name out with a breath of air that she didn't know she'd been holding.

Hannibal didn't miss the reaction Agent Government had to Simon. He stored it away for later. Something that could be used against her, he bet. Oddly, he didn't consider it something that he could use against Simon. Apparently their encounter with Wilson had bonded them closer in his mind than he'd thought.

He turned to face his partner. "It appears, Dr Tam," Hannibal used the formal for Simon's name for the fun of it, because it was a supposedly professional situation, even if the detective was a little bit flighty. "That these fine law enforcement officials have come to question us about recent activities."

Hannibal looked at the detective. "The monkey is not a standard medical apparatus."

"So, you have the monkey as...?" Crews looked from the monkey who certainly could use some attention to the recently arrived Dr. Tam. This looked to be possibly awkward; it was like realizing that Reese and Tidwell were certainly not being professional. He put his hands in his pants pockets, a glint of badge and maybe a hint of gun.

"Dr. Tam. We would like to know what exactly happened? Really simple question." He squinted a little. "I'm still a little confused how two doctors could be responsible for a whole city of zombies."

Actually, he was confused as to how exactly zombies could be created at all; they weren't exactly things one saw in real world, but he was here - here was certainly now where he'd been earlier. There, he was rather certain zombies wouldn't just happen. Well, they wouldn't be started by two doctors. Maybe the government, but not two doctors.

"What about a goldfish?"

"Dr. Lecter." Simon was a little confused, but he looked from his "fellow" doctor to the woman he thought was interested in him. Apparently she was just interested in his connection to the situation; he should have known. Or, perhaps there was some other explanation. Could have been worse, he supposed, she could have been some mystical, magical, who knew what.

"Honestly, I'm a little confused about it myself, Mr..." Simon looked at the red haired man. The goldfish question made Dr. Tam consider calling psych; they may have lost one of their patients.

"Detective Crews." Crews was willing to help, see?

"Detective Crews, I apologize. We are doctors; we're not responsible for an entire city. We can only be held responsible for those we treat." It was a small deflection; Simon was a little more confused as to why Jennifer was here.

Jennifer tried to throw 'I'm sorry' eyes in Simon's direction when nobody else was looking at her, but she didn't know if she pulled it off very well. She'd never been in a situation like this before, and it wasn't simple.

"We need to know how it all started. We need to find out who's responsible for it, if it was purposeful or negligent, and if there are any criminal charges that need to be pressed."

She hated saying things like that to Simon.

"This is all informal." She felt like she needed to reiterate that. "You're not under arrest, and you're not officially under suspicion."

She hoped that meant something to Simon. She could care less about Lecter.

"Later, Charlie, please."

Hannibal had beaten a lie detector before, but he had no need to bother with that sort of thing currently. He didn't feel he was at fault for anything. After all, none of it would have happened had the nurse just stayed put. Or if there had been a better security system in place. For such an advanced hospital, they were certainly lax in certain areas.

"We were conducting experiments." Hannibal said. "It was all under control. Unfortunately we gave responsibility to an incompetent moron, which brought about the abuse of the experimental elements and the spread of the disease. As soon as the outbreak occurred, we were already working on a cure for it."

He was talking mostly to the female. The male didn't seem as if he could hold a singular train of thought for very long.

Crews edged slowly toward the monkey. His head tilted slightly as he watched the primate eat the banana. It didn't seem to care that it had the banana exactly, only that it could go through the motions. The detective understood that more than he'd like.

"So, the moron is responsible. I thought words like 'moron,' 'imbecile,' and ' retarded' were strongly discouraged as descriptions for the mentally challenged. Now all we have to do is find the moron." He didn't seem to care that a slight could be made at his expense; in fact, Crews seemed to be in earnest when it came to the situation. "Then we'll have this crime settle because these doctors are definitely in no way responsible for their experiments."

His hand was extended as if to touch the caged animal, but his attention was on the human animals present.

"Was Frankenstein responsible for his experiment? I always thought he was. I know the mobs certainly did. Maybe that was just in the movies." There was a hint of a smirk in that.

Simon's brow lifted again, but he just took a lean against a counter, his arms crossing about his chest. He caught the look, but he wasn't certain he should believe it. Not with the way her..partner? was acting. When Crews looked away, Simon gave Hannibal a hint of a smile and a shake of his head. Yeah, this was almost as ridiculous as talking to Wilson.

"Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication. Had we been aware that our strict orders would not be adhered to...well, it is simply unfortunate that what happened happened. The cure was readied, as you know, Jennifer." He didn't lay it on thick, not yet anyway. "I'm glad to see that you're looking much better."

"Everyone involved has been dealt with accordingly; you may want to discuss this with Dr. Wilson, Dean of Medicine, for further information." Simon didn't know that Hannibal had said something similar only moments before.

It was true that they'd come up with the cure. They'd done it pretty fast, too. She couldn't imagine what things would have looked like if they hadn't been around. Granted, the zombies probably wouldn't have happened. She was a little bit torn on the matter.

"Thank you." She said to Simon. "I feel a lot better. The bite is completely healed."

Jennifer looked at Charlie and tried to think of something else to ask. She didn't want to pin any of this on Simon, there had to be something else.

"Video." She said suddenly. "There was a video camera in the hallway. Maybe if we can find the day that all of this started, we can see who exactly spread the disease." Then they could put it on somebody else. Anybody else. "If you guys kept everything under lock and key normally, and the ... " she moved her hands, trying to encourage the words to come out of her brain. She was too excited. "Incident only happened when somebody else was left in charge, then it was clearly an accident."

She looked at Crews again for support on this.

"Why did you have to leave somebody else in charge?"

He was paying attention to Agent Government, but didn't answer any of her questions. Instead, he walked toward Detective Crews, trying to figure out just what he thought he was doing.

"The monkey is undead." He told the detective. "I'm not entirely sure that you want to be sticking your fingers in his cage."

Hannibal decided to answer Crews' question about responsibility. "Frankenstein was experimenting to help the human race. We were experimenting for diagnostic purposes." He tapped his notebook. "We did a lot more than just create a disease."

Hannibal didn't really want to show that notebook, there were a lot of things in there that he was protective of.

"You'll have to talk to somebody else about cameras. We don't have the tapes in here."

"Frankenstein's monster killed. The whole book was an examination on playing God. The creator determined to destroy his creation. The experiment wasn't good. He didn't help the human race; he was just rationalizing." Yes, Crews had more in his head than goldfish and questions. He had some knowledge; his attention shifted to his partner. He knew that look too.

"We should look at the tapes. If they have a camera positioned on this room, we could see what happened." He nodded slightly. "We would have our moron and criminal."

He didn't like it; he didn't have to like it to do the job. He didn't like the way they sounded, the doctors. They didn't see themselves responsible for actions beyond their control, but they started this. They were willing to accept collateral damage, and his partner was willing to accept it too.

Simon wasn't going to stop the detective from getting bitten; it wasn't like the man had to worry about becoming a zombie. Simon wondered if the man could even put together enough thought to worry about such things. He didn't see how Jennifer could have been burdened with this ridiculous man.

Although...

Simon understood what the ridiculous man was saying. He understood what Wilson was saying. He'd never tell anyone about the guilt, but it was there. The fact that Detective Crews and Dr. Wilson thought they had any right to censure him for what he was doing...that touched a nerve. Neither of these men had a clue to what could be done, and Simon wasn't about to simply bow his head and ask to be forgiven. He wasn't going to say he'd been a bad boy.

He just shook his head: "conflicted" was the right word for it.

"We were called away for an emergency. We are doctors, and we do have patients. We asked that Nurse..." He paused as he tried to remember the name. "Lesley? to watch the door. She agreed to stay until we had returned; unfortunately she did not. The room was broken into and pillaged. Probably for drugs. The rest you probably know."

She felt like she could breathe a little easier, since Charlie was going to go with her on this video thing. She knew that she wasn't really doing her job very well right now, and she'd have to apologize to him later for that. But she couldn't just stand here and accuse Simon of something like this. If she believed that he was at fault, she was going to have to press charges. If she did that then he would probably have to go to jail.

She really didn't want to put Simon into jail.

If there had been a way to put it all on Lecter, she would have taken that route. But the two of them seemed to be sticking together on things, so they couldn't be divided. Which meant neither could their innocence or guilt.

She would only take this path if it turned out the cameras had caught nothing. Or for some reason either of them were lying. But she didn't get that impression. They were both fairly arrogant about all of it, but they didn't seem to have anything to hide.

"We'll check the hospital records too." She said it more to herself than anybody else.

He turned back to Agent Government, deciding it was time to utterly ignore Detective Crews. The man babbled and it was driving Hannibal to anger. He just wanted the two of them gone so he could sit and compile notes on the zombie disease as well as other things he'd learned about The City.

"If you two are finished?" When they didn't move, Hannibal decided it was time to be a little more blunt about things. "As Dr Tam said, we're doctors, and we have patients to see. If you have no further questions, I'm going to ask you to leave my office. I have lots of work to do. I'm sure you do as well. If you have further questions, I'll be here. "Yes, medical records." Crews understood the tone, and he didn't see how people could find Dr. Lecter charming. He'd never understood how this character could be desirable, why people rooted for him.

As he stepped away from the monkey toward his partner, he stopped to look at Dr. Lecter. It was a stare that few people liked, for whatever reason.

"I don't get it. You look nothing like Anthony Hopkins." Crews stared a little longer, then shrugged, stepping away and giving the other doctor just a glance, as if he wasn't the important one.

"Are you sure they're the same person? Maybe it is one of those based on the story of type things? He's got none of the presence Hopkins had. Is that the word? Presence?" Crews walked out, continuing along the same line.

Simon said nothing for now; he didn't have patients to see exactly. He had a bed that needed to be slept in. It was really all he wanted; he'd have to talk to Jennifer later because he didn't want to think about that conversation right now.

If the doctor had known why Hannibal held the detective in contempt, he might have laughed, or reconsidered his opinion of the scattered man. Simon didn't care for the indirect approach, if it was an approach at all. He didn't like that there was no point to whatever the detective was saying or doing, and he didn't like the way he'd been ignored. Then again, being ignored by a detective might have been exactly what he wanted.

Simon winced as he felt a small headache begin. He needed a good long shower, some tea, and sleep. That was all he needed.

He did give Jennifer a small smile; he wasn't angry. He was only a little confused and concerned and tired. It all showed. Everything would be okay; he'd trust her like she trusted him.

"I'm sure they're the same person, Charlie." Jennifer said. Her tone a little bit mothering, not at all exhausted. She didn't mind his questions or his curiosity or the way his thoughts worked. She sort of liked it, actually. He thought outside of the box, and that's just what she needed in a partner. "It's the younger him. I'll get you the book from the library."

Such a strange thing to say, she knew, but she also knew that she'd find it there. She hadn't read it herself, and she wasn't sure she wanted to, but she had a feeling that Charlie would at least find it amusing.
