i_object Coffee break [OPEN]
The Nagging of Karen Page had finally gotten to Matt. She kept bringing him more paperwork, typed in braille and on regular computer printouts, as an excuse to bother him about finding Foggy. He wanted to find Foggy just as much as she did, but he also needed to concentrate on this case that was fast approaching. Finally, in a moment of frustration, Matt had thrown all of his notes into a briefcase and announced he was going to the coffee shop on the corner for lunch. She could find him there if there was an emergency.
Following the smell of freshly brewed coffee, Matt made his way to the shop, briefcase in one hand, cane in the other. The shop had changed corners today. He snaked a path through traffic to get across the street. But, ever the bloodhound nose, he found the little shop...along with, what, 300 other patrons? Sighing, Matt still pushed the door open. If it got him away from Karen's interruptions, he'd do his best to block out the people. There were barely any places to sit inside, so he went into full blind man mode. Tapping his cane furiously in front of him, knocking into people's shins, apologizing with every step, Matt soon cleared a path up to the counter. The waitresses were more than sympathetic as he (purposefully) dropped his change on the floor. He had done it to figure out where people were sitting. The coins reverberated off the floor as they hit, Matt was able to quickly map out the locations of feet nearby with his radar sense. The waitress who gathered up his change and handed it back to him offered to find him a seat, which he accepted. The same girl even offered to bring him his tea and sandwich when it was ready.
As much as Matt enjoyed being independent, it was situations like this that he had to admit he milked it a little. If he could find a Catholic church nearby, he'd go to confession and get it off his chest. There were some things he did that he didn't like doing and they weighed down his conscience now and again. Waiting for his tea and sandwich to come, he opened his briefcase and took out his sprial-bound notebook of braille notes for the Napier case.
The seats were becoming more scarce as the lunch hour decended on the shop and table Matt was seated at had room for more.

It was busy in the cafe, MJ could have gone elsewhere but the skinny decaf vanilla-mocha late here was just to die for. Besides she didn't have to be to her next agent meeting for two more hours, she could kill some time and then maybe her nerves would be settled. She'd been a bit set off to realize that even though she'd only recently arrived she'd already recieved a Jury summons... In all her time in Manhattan she'd never gotten one..and here she was, not even a month in this place and already she'd been pegged.
Not fair, not fair at all...but such was life. MJ gave her order, tacking on a blue berry muffin for the sheer pleasure of it, and stepped to the side to wait. Like everyone else she casulaly looked over the place, heads over lap tops, magazines..a couple with her picture beaming at her from the back cover, and a few chatters sitting along the stuffed sofa. One head in particular stuck out from the crowd, rakish red drawing the eye like a fire engine..wait! She knew those tresses.. A closer look and she herself let one of those cover girl smiles slip.
Coffee and muffin in and MJ made her way to the table, stopping just shy.
"This seat taken?"

Matt, turning his head towards the speaker, recognized the voice instantly this time.
"Hi, MJ." He waved his hand towards the seat. "Be my guest."
Reaching across the table, he made sure there weren't any papers in her way. Matt didn't mind if any food got on his papers, but he didn't want to be taking up the whole table on her.
"I'm still waiting for my sandwich," he said, thumbing over his shoulder towards the busy counter. Setting his work aside for a moment, he smiled slightly. "How are you?"
From: i_hide Date: 06/08/2006 18:22:53
Patrons milled about, some looking for tables others waiting on orders but all wit something going on in their lives. A wonder of the adaptability of man that all of these people were brought here and just naturally accepted life as it was.
"I'm great. When I mentioned getting coffee I hadn't thought it'd be so soon." A cheeky grin and she seated herself after Mat had been kind enough to clear away his things.
"Oh are you working? I didn't even think, Matt I'm sorry." Of course that was why he had all his papers scattered about. Now she felt a bit intrusive.
From: i_object Date: 06/08/2006 18:39:36
"Oh no, you're not interrupting," he said with a nonchalant wave of his hand. "I needed a break anyway. This case is giving me a real headache."
The girl with his tea and sandwich had arrived and lingered awkwardly away from the table. She wasn't quite sure where to place the plate with his large books taking up half the table. Hearing her nervous pulse, Matt made a space for her to put the plate down.
"Thank you," Matt said, smiling up at the waitress. Reaching out to his cup of tea, he carefully removed the lid on the to-go cup and pulled out the tea bag. By the smell, they had left it seeping while his sandwich was being made. "MJ, would you mind passing the sugar? Unless you see any honey around..."
There was a little cup full of sugar packets in the middle of the table, but Matt couldn't tell which of the packets were real sugar and which weren't.

"Yeah sorry I was just...hey look... I got this thing in the mail, jury summons. Known anything about the legal system here? Like how to get out of it?"
MJ made a face and reached for the sugar packets, belatedly realizing there was indeed the familiar bear shaped honey bottle on a nearby table. She leaned and plucked that up. The bottle was sat down near his hand and she nibbled on the muffin while he poured it into his tea.

Matt stirred his tea as he thought about the jury summons. "What I know is that it's a pretty similar system to New York. At least all of the books in my office have said that. I'm already involved in a couple of cases here and I've been doing the same as I did before."
He cocked his head, considering her question about getting out of it. "It could be the same as New York. Family commitments, previous engagements that really can't be changed, that sort of thing. Have you been to jury selection or voir dire yet? That's usually the best time to get out of serving."

Smart man, she always did admire the type. Of course he would know and his explanation was quite clear. Unfortunately it was also a bit late in coming, only for her own want of asking.
"I was afraid it would be something like that, I went to summons and they took me as an alternate juror. I thought maybe that was a leeway sort of position. Guess that means I'll be having to sit through the whole thing."

Matt took a bite of his sandwich and nodded.
"Yes," he said, after swallowing. "You just won't get to take part in the verdict. It could be interesting for you to see how the whole process works from the inside." Picking up his tea he paused before drinking, smiling a little. "Although, that's coming from the man who does it for a living."
He drank a sip of tea and then turned back to his sandwich.

"Yeah, you'd be bored to tears on a modeling set too." Return of his smile and a soft chuckle, so she had a schedule now, at least it was something to keep her busy.
"At least I know someone in case I get in trouble, always nice to have a friend in the system." She raised her coffee in salute and sipped.
From: i_object Date: 06/15/2006 09:02:00
"Oh...I don't know. Maybe there would be someone interesting to talk to on a modeling set. At least the models would know I wasn't checking them out constantly. Though I wonder if that might offend some..." Matt said, grinning. There were hot girls at modeling sets. He might be blind, but he sure as heck wouldn't pass up the opportunity, should it arrive. He was only human, after all.
"At least I know someone in case I get in trouble, always nice to have a friend in the system."
Matt sobered from his teasing. "Anytime, MJ."
From: i_hide Date: 06/21/2006 22:34:36
"Well then, I'll have you come by for a shot one day. There's a pretty good number of girls who would love to meet an attractive, successful lawyer."
Matt would be like honey to flies, she couldn't help but grin at how the hero slash attourney would have the tables turned on him. He would find himself the one being questioned by most of them.
"Yeah, some egos are fragile. It's always best to act impressed around models."
She knew it never failed to stroke her ego.
From: i_object Date: 06/22/2006 07:17:00
Talk about stroking an ego. But Matt immediately weighed his batting average for relationships. It wasn't that he was bad at picking up women, he was just emotionally distant (or so he'd been told) and at risk for killing them off once they got into an intimate relationship. Maybe the City would be different. The few times he'd been out as Daredevil, no crazy hitmen had tried to kill him.
"The same goes for lawyers."
And before he could stop himself... "It would definitely be a nice change. Y'know, to get out and see something different than a courtroom. I think I might give myself a month off after this case. Though, I haven't told my secretary yet. She'll flip."
Reaching forward, he picked up his tea again and took another drink.
From: i_hide Date: 06/22/2006 19:35:27
The same went for lawyers? She would never have thought it especially not of him.
"Well, consider me impressed then."
She honestly thought he'd demure any offer of something so base as a modeling shoot, when he didn't she grin wider then ever.
"Well now you've done it. You, Matthew Murdoch are going to be my personal pet project."
So many girls she could set him up with, but he deserved better then some brain dead bimbo.
From: i_object Date: 06/22/2006 20:28:24
Well, not necessarily him...but there were definitely lawyers in the field who constantly needed their egos stroked. Especially during cross-examinations and the like. Matt was content to disappear into the background half the time. He got enough attention being a blind attorney from Hell's Kitchen.
Matt laughed. "I don't like the sound of that, MJ. Don't- don't try...I mean..." He cleared his throat, setting his mug of tea down on the table, nearly hitting the plate. The china barely clinked and he moved the cup to the side. "I don't have any luck with...y'know, women."
From: i_hide Date: 06/22/2006 22:51:28
"You never had me in your corner either."
She gave his shoulder a gentle shove.
"Come on, you're smart, you have a great job, you're funny, handsome. I can think of a dozen girls off the top of my head that would be crazy about you. Models work weird hours, so..the schedule thing shouldn't be a problem."
She sobered a little bit, her voice to a softer quality.
"Matt, life is too short to spend it alone, trust me. Make the most of it, every second you can."
From: i_object Date: 06/23/2006 07:30:31
Matt set his jaw. All the girls he'd ever been involved with ran through his head...Elektra, Karen (who was now, scarily enough, back from the dead), Natasha, Heather, Glorianna... All, save for Natasha and partially Elektra, had been killed or committed suicide. He was a dating service's worst nightmare. His work as Daredevil didn't just mean late nights, but it also meant sporatic nights.
But he understood where MJ was coming from. Maybe this City would be different. He was too much attuned to his routine back home. Things would be different, even if he made it different. He resolved himself to try this modelling set set-up with MJ. He could always go for the eye candy (and just hope they were doing a water shoot...)
"Alright," he said finally. "When and where?"
From: i_hide Date: 06/25/2006 21:29:39
"I'll check my schedule and give you a call. Once your trial is over, I mean. Trust me, it'll be fun."
A glance to her watch had MJ jumping up.
"Ohh speaking of, I gotta run for a shoot. I'll call you soon!"
She touched his shoulder lightly before she walked out of the cafe. Matt was a great guy and he certainly deserved someone nice, or at least a pretty distraction. Matt, like Pete, worked entirely too much.
