i_crusade The Mad Dash [Mal & Inara / Open]
It was the right decision.
When the couple were safely inside the car, Batman took the precious second and a half to find the kit in the back seat. There were bandages in there, tape, gauze.... Enough to get by with for now, for the brief minutes it would take to get them to the hospital. He tossed it at Mal, then slid into his seat and sent the Batmobile careening onto its path.
"Who did this?" Batman asked, his voice gritty and dark.
The City was shifting again, surprisingly. The road to the hospital felt much shorter, which was an unrequested blessing that the Dark Knight was grateful for. Sometimes this City had its good sides. Then again, if the City had kidnapped the beauty in his back seat as well, it probably had a reason for bringing her here, too. Dying in the street did not seem to be one of them.

Unfortunately Inara could offer no input to the tall dark man, and that might have ben for the best. I her state nothing she could have said would have been helpful. Things like Reavers and things like giant bats were not what she was trained to deal with, she was a woman of elegance and sophistication. Though she prided herself on being able to get by in any sort of company, this was most decidedly not the one should would have picked out for herself.
But for another age and different circumstances that dark knight could have been the man holding her, he shared the same spirit as Mal, she would have liked to know that. Mal, much as Eddie had, denied his nobility, but acts like this only served to reinforce that he was indeed a noble man. Inara saw that so clearly in him, and he would fight her to his dieing breath on it.
Mal, with the assistance of the displaced protector of Gotham, was taking her to get help, all she could offer was no resistance and the soft irregular sounds of her breathing. Her body was limp against the lanky Browncoat, even somehow in this state trusting him to see her through. The rest was in the hands of whatever God was watching over them now.

The ride to the hospital was mercifully short. He had called ahead - like some demented restaurant experience - so that the paramedics met them on the steps.
As soon as Mal had her out of the car, and Batman saw that they were in good hands, he left. There was no need to stay.
And darkness lay over his City tonight.
