i_avoidliving Eventually Death finds us all [ Didi ]
Beeeeeeeeeeeeep!
"Millie? This is Deloris. I know you're on vacation, but when are you planning on coming back to work? Are you feeling alright? Are you drinking enough water, because you know that can help if you're feeling a little under the weather. You haven't gone on some kind of relapse, have you? Look, Millie, I'm sure that fine Rube gentleman can help you and get you through this. You just need to have some faith in yourself. And drink water. Drink lots of water and I know that you'll be right back on your--"
Beeeeeeeeeeeep!
George grumbled at her answering machine from the safe little nest she'd made under the rumpled comforter of her bed. It was a little bunchy where parts of the stuffing had gathered into inconsistent lumps, but George didn't mind. Just as long as she didn't have to go back to either of her jobs.
Her bed was a safe place.

There may have been the sharp scent of spices in the air. Or the sounds of something cooking. Bubbling over. Vegetables. Chicken. Pasta. The shell kind. They were easier to eat than noodles, but just as fun.
The kettle let out a sharp whistle. Then the tinking sounds of ceramic being moved around. And it was all coming from the direction of the kitchen.
Death hummed a bit as she cooked. It wasn't too often that she got a chance to do this, but she'd gotten to be pretty good at it.
"If you say it loud enough, you'll always sound precocious, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!"
Then, a head peeked out of the doorway between the kitchen and the bedroom. "How do you like your tea? Milk and sugar? I can't find any honey."

George peeked out from the nest she'd made in the covered and gave Didi a bleary eyed groan.
"Don't you knock?"
She didn't think much of who she considered to be her fellow undead grim reaper having broke into her apartment. A lot of reapers became pretty good at breaking into the places of people they'd reaped in order to collect what they could to make a living or, in George's case, squat in their apartment.
"...I wouldn't trust the milk."
The food did smell good, but eating it might suggest George was ready to go back to work. That George wanted to go back to work ever again.

Death shook her head. "No, not usually. People tend to not answer the door for me. I think there's been a few songs written about it. Like a warning?"
She took George's advice and left the milk as it was, but added a few spoonfuls of sugar to the tea and brought a pair of mugs over to the bed. "Soup is simmering. You can have that next."
One of the mugs was handed over to George. It had Oscar the Grouch painted on it. Didi kept the Fraggle Rock one for herself. "I couldn't find any mugs that weren't cracked, so I brought some of my own."

George didn't drink her tea. Instead she held her mug and the resemblance on her face to that of Oscar the Grouch couldn't have been clearer.
"I don't want to go back to work."
She stared and noticed how pale Didi seemed compared to everyone else. This was strange as reapers tended to look normal like everyone else. It wasn't highly noticeable, but it didn't seem right either.
George was keeping her cool exterior by attempting to practice her awesome powers of not caring. Though it wasn't going to keep up for too long.

"So don't. Happy Time can manage for a few more days without you."
Didi took a sip of her own tea, even though she didn't get much taste out of it. George was lucky to be undead. She could still taste things. Didi only had that chance once a century.
"What are you going to do in the meantime? Your body needs some fuel. I mean, it can survive without, obviously, but the side effects aren't very pleasant."
From: i_avoidliving Date: 05/24/2006 11:29:44
Reluctantly, George sipped her tea.
"I was referring to my other job."
Her small, button nose couldn't help but sniff at the air. The soup that Didi was making smelled really nice. George was trying to resist, but her stomach had already thrown in the towel and growled loudly.
From: i_amjustme Date: 05/24/2006 11:44:41
"Oh," said Didi. "That job."
The soup did smell good. Death got up from her spot on the bed and went into the kitchen. She ladeled out a bowl for George, one thick with chicken bits and noodles, found a spoon, and brought it back.
"Here you go. Chicken soup is good for you. Strengthens the immune system, or something. Really, it just releases endorphines and makes you feel good. And then the endorphines do all the work on the body and stuff."
She picked up her mug again. "Now. Why don't you like your job?"
From: i_avoidliving Date: 05/24/2006 11:52:51
"Oh I don't know. I consider myself pretty tolerant. Blood splatter on my favorite jacket, fine. Getting skewed by shrapnel from a falling neon sign, okay. My bad for being so close, right?"
George paused. Her face scrunched up because she wanted to look pissed and not be hurt. Hurt meant that she was still scared, that she was still vulnerable.
"...i just feel so violated. how was i supposed to know he was there? ...what was i supposed to do?"
From: i_amjustme Date: 05/24/2006 12:02:15
Didi immediately moved closer on the bed, wrapping an arm around George's shoulders. "I'm sorry, Georgia. That really wasn't the right place for you to be. You're still pretty new to this, aren't you?"
She tried to smile. "You did good, though. You got the nice old lady out of there in time. And you got back home alright."
From: i_avoidliving Date: 05/24/2006 12:08:11
George withered away from Didi's touch.
"Are you my new boss? ...Where the Hell is Rube? Why can't he be here? Did you send me to that reap? Did you know he would be there? Did you?"
Now George was a mixture of angry and hurt. Because sure it was nice to still be able to taste things as one of the undead, but it wasn't nice to be able to feel someone cut off your head and your arms and your legs. To be aware of all of it that was happening. That wasn't pleasant at all.
From: i_amjustme Date: 05/24/2006 12:21:26
Didi winced. She'd meant to warm George up to this.
"I didn't know he'd still be there. And I certainly didn't know he'd do anything to you. I only know who dies. And when. And... where and how." She shrugged. "You didn't die. So, I didn't know that was going to happen."
From: i_avoidliving Date: 05/24/2006 12:24:43
"But you knew about the killer. You knew how she was going to die. You knew it wasn't going to be some kind of an accident or a suicide..."
George was glaring.
From: i_amjustme Date: 05/24/2006 12:32:17
"Yes. But I'm not my brother - I don't know if the killer is going to stick around, or run away. Usually, they run. That one didn't. I'm sorry you got stuck there, and that he did that to you, but there's certainly nothing I could have done to prevent it. If I could have, I would have."
She looked back at George. "That's how some people die, Georgia. Mishaps. Murders. What some people consider untimely."
From: i_avoidliving Date: 05/24/2006 13:06:19
"Don't you think I know that? But those untimely mishaps are supposed to happen to them. Not to me. I already had mine. Isn't that supposed to be enough?"
Oscar just didn't look grouchy enough anymore.
"I can't even do anything about it. I can't go to the police... even if I did think of a story... I really hate this. It wouldn't even be interfering with anyone's death."
From: i_amjustme Date: 05/25/2006 18:59:03
"Just because you already died doesn't mean you're finished. You might not be completely alive, but it's better than being all dead, don't you think?"
Didi sighed. "If not, there's always that option. Life... tends to throw things like this at you. You survive, you brush it off, and you keep going. Or you give up."
Death shrugged. "At least you have the choice. That hasn't changed."
From: i_avoidliving Date: 05/26/2006 21:27:02
George opened her mouth to protest, her brows knitted in an angry fashion.
"......."
Eventually her shoulders slumped and she sighed.
"...Great choice."
From: i_amjustme Date: 05/26/2006 21:42:59
Death nodded, smiling sadly. "But it is a choice. Benefit of being human. And not everyone decides to stick around. The Wood of Suicides is getting pretty damn crowded, from what I hear."
Gently, she prodded the bowl of soup. "You should eat that. It's good for you."
