Lt. Cooper pushed the forensic files at Sara and she glanced over, seeing glossy full color pics of Iron's hand. Her hand went up to her neck, remembering the tug she'd felt just as he'd done it.
"You've had your time off, Detective. Now, think you can explain this ? Our CI guys have been all over that place, there's no body anywhere. Just a hand. And I've checked our files, there's not an open case on Irons Investments, so what the hell were you doing on the roof ?"
Munch had coached her on this. Well, as much as he could as she hadn't even told him the full truth. It didn't matter that he could see the Witchblade. That was the Blade's decision, not hers. She wanted to keep her head down and lie low in this place. But that meant not explaining much of what had been going on right before she'd ended up in the City. Unfortunately it wasn't the first time she'd had to fudge things.
"Maybe whoever called the police saw something suspicious the same way I did. Two men arguing."
"And how'd you see to the top of a business building, Pezzini."
"I was in the building across the street. The newspaper, talking to a source." She let her eyes go deadpan and her mouth fall into a line. Most superiors wouldn't push for information on a source. Even the crooked ones. Which according to Munch, Cooper might be. Apparently she was knee thick in a crooked force. So thick that Munch suggested that shared outsider experience aside, she should watch him, as he'd be watching her, before they made any final decisions on if they were both clean. Sara squeezed her hand, sure, despite whatever her partner had said that this was the Blade's fault.
The lieutenant leaned back in her chair, relaxing a little. "So, you see an argument and what, figured you'd just go up there like a beat cop and cool it down ?"
"One of them was a business man. In a suit. And it was a violent argument, lieutenant, in a dangerous place. Yes, I thought maybe seeing a badge would get them either tell me the problem or separate to take it somewhere else."
"What happened next ?"
"I don't know." Which wasn't exactly a lie. Even the first bit about the two men arguing wasn't exactly a lie. "The next thing I knew I was on that rooftop and there was that hand on the ledge but no body and the coat flapping in the breeze on the gravel."
Cooper had blue eyes, they narrowed now. "The hospitals aren't reporting any emergencies that fit. But they're on the lookout."
"I don't think they'll find anything, sir. If the hand belongs to the guy in the suit he might have a private doctor that won't feel compelled to call in cause it wasn't a GSW."
Cooper nodded. "True. And this City has enough medical professionals walking on the wrong side of the line that someone could get patched up and it not make the lines. Still, I think we should keep this file open. Something happened on that rooftop. An assassination, a message, something. A shot to the head is too easy, cutting off a hand has to mean something."
Sara simply nodded. "Is that all, sir ?"
"Yeah, you can tell Munch to stop hanging around outside my door like a lost sheep. You two have paperwork on this to fill and then you're on rotation."
Sara stood. "Yeah, thanks, lieutenant."
