Fawkes, Darien. The only officer willing to go on record in regards to the Valerio case. She wasn't entirely familiar with the inner workings of the City's underworld, but she had experienced enough to know that Valerio was well-connected, and a threat that needed to be eliminated.
Very well-connected.
Somehow, there were no records of any other cases connected with Valerio, and no other officers willing to take the stand as witnesses in regards to the drug trafficking bust from a few months back. She had immediately been assigned the case when she'd taken on the job as Prosecuting attorney for the City. She supposed they'd hoped that the new girl would give up after the lack of evidence, and take the heat for not seeing it through.
They had thought wrong.
She knew the drug trafficking was merely the tip of the iceberg. She also knew the bust had been on the assumption that it was a disorganized band of thugs, and not the crime kingpin of the City.
She also knew that pursuing this meant risking certain things.
She was more than ready to take that risk, however.
And clearly, there was still at least one cop who wasn't entirely corrupt in the City, and he was going to help her. She would try asking nicely at first.
After receiving very little direction from the rest of the officers in the department, she found her way to an office at the end of a very dimly lit hallway. She stopped just outside the dingy door with the slightly askew nameplate, reading "Fawkes." Mentally, she reviewed the case details. Apparently, Detective Fawkes had been MIA for the last few weeks. Something about memory loss. He was back now, however, which, to her, signified a return of memory.
She raised her hand and knocked on the door-two short, determined raps.

Darien's office was only slightly bigger than a broom closet. He had a table and a chair instead of a proper desk, a bookshelf that was mostly falling apart (which he had been surprised to find held some philosopy and word-search books). The only other item in the room was a small knee-high locker, new enough and with a decent enough lock that he knew it certainly wasn't the property of the police department.
He hadn't known the combination, but opening the lock had been a piece of cake. Inside he had found a few forms and papers, all of which pertained to his job without really telling him anything important. The other thing had been a palmtop computer, one that looked like a toy but was apparently hooked up to some sort of network. Expensive-looking, but he decided to keep it.
In fact, he was playing Solitaire on it when there was a knock at his door. Darien didn't even look up, absorbed with dragging the little cards to the stacks with the computer pen. "Come in, it's open."

Helena smiled politely as she entered the room-for all the good it did, as she didn't get so much as a look from the man, who seemed to be asorbed in something on his palmtop. She hoped for his sake that it wasn't something he could get fired for looking at at work.
"I'm Helena Wayne, with the District Attorney's office. Your chief might have mentioned that I was stopping by to ask you a few questions in regards to the Valerio case."

Darien looked up when she spoke, setting aside the computer pen and closing the palmtop. The chief hadn't mentioned that, actually, though it would've been really nice to know some lawyer would be coming over. It didn't help that he had no recollection of a Valerio case whatsoever.
"The Valerio case... Oh, that's right. Why don't you have a seat?," he asked, motioning towards a folding chair set up directly across from his table.

She smiled thankfully then and took a seat, crossing her legs and leaning in ever so slightly, her voice automatically lowering, as though someone might be around to escort her out the door if she spoke too loudly.
"I appreciate you speaking with me. Some of your co-workers have been less than cooperative, and I really need to get Valerio off the streets, even if it is only on a drug charge-it's something, right?"
She reached into her purse for a small tape recorder. It never hurt to take precautions. Setting the recorder on his desk, she raised an eyebrow.
"Do you mind if I record this conversation?" It wasn't really a question, but she had learned that when interviewing, it was better to allow the person to think they were the one calling the shots.

Darien nodded automatically, "Oh, yeah. You have to nail them any way you can, in this business. I'll be more than happy to help."
He seemed fairly casual on the outside, but on the inside he was mentally flailing. Darien couldn't just say he didn't know about the case - it was bad enough that he had been considered absent for so long, but incompetence about something like this might just get him fired. It was weird working for the police after all the time he's spent in jail, but it was far better than not having a job.
"Recording's fine," he said, looking as amiable as he could manage. Darien wasn't good with professional, so he just shot for friendly.

"Great," she said, setting up the tape recorder.
"So, tell me about the night of March 21st. You didn't realize Valerio was the owner of the house until after the bust, right?"
From: [info]i_disappear Date: 02/14/2006 21:01:46
Darien leaned back in his chair, hooking a foot around a leg of the table so he wouldn't fall over. He was silent for a moment, trying to picture how best to go about doing this. The trick was to be vague, but hit on a few key points. If it worked for fortune cookies, it'd work for him.
"That's right," he began. "It was a pretty routine bust. We had gotten word that something was going down that night, so we sent in a few cops posing as interested buyers." Darien started sounding more casual as he got more into the story, "So, you know, they had wires on, we waited until we heard the deal being made, and bam! We went in and arrested people." He nodded, more to himself than anything. "Yeah, it wasn't until we got back and they checked the address that we found out it was Valerio's house."

A little more detail would help, but he was clearly not the most long-winded here.
"I understand he'd hidden his ownership under an alias, correct?"
