i_snoop [Thread] - Nancy's arrival. Open
Dirving to Emerson to see Ned had never caused any sort of problem before - well, ecxluding any of the times Nancy found mysteries on campus that implicated any of Ned's friends. No, the drive itself was usually uneventful, and by now Nancy knew it like the back of her hand.
So that did not explain why she currently had no idea where she was. She knew for certain she hadn't missed a turn, or turned too soon, or headed the wrong direction or anything that might explain why she was nowhere near Emerson College now. Her fingers tightened on the steeringwhell of herblue Mustang Convertible as she looked around for anything that might seem familiar.
Nothing. In fact the more she drove, the more worried she grew, especially since the part of town she was in - whatever town it was - seemd as though there'd been some impressive gunplay just recently. Sharp eyes scanned the areas gliding by her window, alsmot as if memorizing details.
The first chance she got, she needed to find a slightly more safe neighborhood, and then, find someone to ask questions. A few minutes more down the road, she saw open park, not large or very inviting, but there were people walking about there. Maybe someone knew which way she should go to get back to the highway at least. She turned off the ignition and climbed out of the car, looking for someone to talk to.

As absolutely insane as this 'town' seemed to Veronica, she did have to take Backup out for walks and to get exercise everyday. And, since the dog was used to running around on the beach, she felt like she had to find a reasonably suitable substitute and had settled on a park she found while wandering around the day before.
Backup seemed to be able to tell that something was off about this place, but at least he seemed to be trying to adapt to it and accepted that this was where Veronica would be playing fetch with him.
She glanced up, having just tossed a branch towards a bench for Backup to go after, hearing the sound of a car motor. As old as her own car was, Veronica wished that she had it right now -- it would have made trying to figure out what was going on a lot easier if she could have driven around until she found a highway.
The girl who got out looked about her age and, surprisingly, not nearly as 'broken in' to this place as everyone else seemed.

Nancy's sharp eyes found a number of likely people to talk to immediately, but none so much as the blonde girl who seemed near her own age. She was playing with a dog, but it was clear she was watching Nancy. Blue eyes serious, Nancy crossed the patch in front of her and approached the girl.
"That's a beautiful dog," she offered, with a small smile. "What's his - or her - name?"

Veronica didn't want to let her guard down just because the other girl seemed normal enough, but she did have to admit that it was actually nice to meet someone who didn't look like they robbed banks as a hobby. "Backup," she said with a wry smile. The dog's name had, of course, made for a lot of not so clever quips at home.
She rubbed the palms of her hands on her jeans to make sure that they weren't covered with Backup's fur, then help one out. "Hi. I'm Veronica. Veronica Mars."

Nancy smiled. "Backup? That's clever. I like it." She shook Veronica's hand. "I'm Nancy Drew. Nice to meet you. May I?" she asked, looking to the dog, clearly asking to pet him.

The girl seemed to get, at least somewhat, the irony of Backup's given name. That won her a few points in Veronica's book.
She nodded in response to Nancy's question. "Go ahead. He only bites the 'bad guys'."

Nancy immediately reached under Backup's jaw, smiling at the delight with which he threw himself into the scratching. "Well, I'm glad I'm not one of those. You mind if I ask something? Are you from this city?" Even as she spoke, she move her hand up scratching behind Backup's ears, chuckling as his leg started to twitch.

That was the question of the hour. And it made Veronica immediately wonder if maybe she had found someone, like herself, who had found themselves in a strange city with no recollection of how she had gotten there.
Veronica gave Nancy a wry smile and shook her head. "No." She paused; saying that she had just 'woken up' here was bound to sound absolutely insane and who knew what they did to insane people here. On the other hand... she didn't want to miss an opportunity that might not present itself again.
"This city's very... strange..." she finally said, cautiously.

Nancy looked at Veronica a moment before nodding. "That's putting it mildly. Honestly I got myself lost - which I never do - and found myself here. Wherever here is. I was wondering if anyone knew how to get back to the highway."

Veronica almost wanted to laugh from relief that it seemed that Nancy had somehow found herself lost here. But laughing probably wasn't the response that the other girl was expecting.
"No... I haven't seen any signs for the highway since I got here. Of course, my car seems to be missing, which might be why I haven't seen any." Veronica paused, trying to think up to the best way to instantly figure out whether Nancy was in the exact same situation as she was and, finally, asked, "Were you trying to find your way to Neptune, California?"

Nacy gave Veronica an odd look. "No, actually. I was heading for Boston. Emerson College, to be specific." Now that was strange. California? The opposite side of the country?
"Pardon me for asking, but what do you mean missing? As in stolen?" Nancy suspected not. Veronia seemed more abstracted or confused than the upset or put out Nancy assmued she would be had her car been stolen.
But that California bit bothered her. She couldn't possibly have driven in the complete opposite direction. Somewhere she would have had to get turned around, and she was about ninety-nine percent sure that hadn't happened. And it wasn't like she didn't know the way to Emerson well. So how did she wind up here? And was here anywhere near Neptune, California?

Maybe she had taken a step too far with mentioning Neptune. Veronica hoped Nancy didn't start to think that she was absolutely insane. Then again, this entire situation was insane. And if Nancy was just as lost as she was, they were wasting time dancing around the subject and trying to figure each other out without directly saying anything about themselves. And Boston? Clearly, something very, very strange was happening.
"I mean missing as in... I woke up in my apartment. And everyone was gone except for Backup. And my car was gone. Along with my building's parking lot.
"This place is strange. To be honest, I'm from Neptune. My apartment is in Neptune. I went to sleep in Neptune. But I don't think this is Neptune."

Hold the phone. "Your entire apartment was missing?" Nancy stared at Veronica incredulously. If Nancy hadn't had the strange experience in winding up here - wherever here it was - she probably would have thought the other woman insane. As it was, it made her far more curious.
"No, and I'm sure it's not Boston either. So how did we wind up here?" Nancy asked the question, more thinking aloud than searching for a real answer. "And where is this place?"
