Harvey laughed half-heartedly at Sophie's attempt at being funny, and shook his head, descending the steps with the two envelopes in his hand, looking at their return addresses for signs of the state lottery logo. He had a feeling the man was joking, but it was difficult to tell with some of the folks in this neighborhood. For all Harvey knew, there was a chance that this Nolan Robinson fellow had moved into this house after winning a large cash award. This did not seem to be the case, though, as he glanced over the two envelopes.
"Nope," he said finally, holding the two pieces of mail out to his neighbor. "Actually, one looks like it's from the Lake Association, and the other looks like.... I don't know, probably a bill." He grinned sheepishly, realizing perhaps he should have just laughed at the joke rather than nosily poking around in someone else's business, but he hoped Nolan would be forgiving of the faux pas. Surely the children who were hanging on him and trying to embarrass him had committed worse acts, and probably in the last few minutes.
"I'm Harvey Schermerhorn," he said, extending a hand to greet Nolan formally. "I live in the apartment above the garage next door." He gestured to the stairway he had just left behind. "God knows what the mailman was smoking when he mixed up Schermerhorn and Robinson, but... that's the way it goes, I guess."
