In truth, Todd was looking for any and all reasons to be out of the house. Since throwing himself at Joseph and losing Seth and probably deciding to drop out of law school, he didn't feel much like being alone, and he didn't really feel much like being around Winifred either. She hadn't said as much, really, but he felt like she was judging him for his behavior and his decisions, and he worried that she would think less of him as a friend if he talked too much about what was going on with him.
So the idea of helping someone new move into the neighborhood was very appealing. Not only did it give him a reason to get moving and maybe get some exercise (that winter muffin-top could go away now, thanks!), but it also have him hope of making a new friend, of getting to know someone who didn't realize what a train wreck his life had been since Christmas.
It didn't take long at all for Todd to jog from Unit 20 to Unit 1, counting down the numbers as he went. Panting only slightly from the run, he knocked on the door of the apartment and waited to be greeted.
