It was an immense relief to have an excuse to leave. It was also a relief that Dylan had been kind enough to acknowledge that she had absolutely no desire to talk to pretty much everyone else there. She was sure she’d hear something about her leaving from someone at one point, but it didn’t matter. None of them had ever really been a huge part of her life here.
Elyse began walking in the direction he had made a motion to and out of habit had moved her hands down to shove them into invisible jean pockets. She had forgotten she was wearing a dress, not that she minded too much but didn’t tend to dress up that often. Glimpsing back at him, she asked, “So did you stay here all this time?” She couldn’t recall if he had left the town when she was younger, although she was pretty sure he hadn’t helped her Gram the entire time she had lived there. The comment had also served the purpose to turn the conversation onto something other than herself and Rebecca.
