Who: Violet Blackwood and Rick Patton What: Talking about the day the music Vi's fiance died Where: Violet's house When: Saturday afternoonish (3/28/09) Rating: PG-13 to R (again with the mouth) Status: COMPLETED!
Friday night into Saturday morning, Violet had barely slept. Ever since Derek's passing, she had been plagued with occasional insomnia, and while she knew she should probably see a doctor about it, she was almost afraid to get a prescription for sleeping pills. The way her current state of mind was, she didn't trust herself to stick to her prescribed dosage. Eventually, she had fallen asleep around six AM, only to wake up again by nine. At first, she was confused by the way her stomach was churning, but then she remembered - Rick, the man who had been beside Derek the day he died, was supposed to be coming over to tell her about that day. The Army's description of the incident was very simple and described in the broadest of terms, so as not to upset her or the rest of Derek's family. Right after his death, Violet thought that it was easier to not know every gory detail, because it meant that she didn't have to imagine what it had been like for him in those last horrifying moments. But now, five months later, Violet found that against her better judgment, she did want to know what really happened to her fiance.
The morning had passed by in slow, agonizing minutes. After showering and pulling up her hair into a simple low ponytail, Violet had stared into her closet for what seemed like hours before settling on a white sweater and blue jeans. As always, Derek's dogtags hung from their chain around her neck along with the engagement ring he had given her two and a half years prior. Morning slipped into afternoon, and Violet found that she could not sit still. She wished that she had thought to get Rick's phone number, or at least given him hers, so that she would know what time he was planning on coming over. The more she waited, the more Violet began to think that maybe this was a bad idea after all, that she never should have invited this stranger into her home to talk about her dead fiance. But, since she lacked a way to contact Rick except through the internet journals, she figured she might as well just sit and wait it out. The waiting had to be worse than what he was going to tell her... right?
