"Turn left in 30 meters."
Winifred eyed the dark roadway critically. She swore she didn't see any turn off in 30 meters. It felt like there hadn't been one in 30 miles much less 30 meters!
"Turn left in 15 meters."
Her eyes scanned the left side of the road in a harsh, almost accusatory manner. There was no bloody left turn in 15 meters! She was sure of it now!
"Turn left in 5 meters."
"I'd love to, Ma'am, but I'd like my car to stay intact and crashing into trees isn't generally good for the paint job. You'll have to understand," Winifred said to her GPS in a conversational tone.
"You have passed your turn. Make a u-turn and turn around."
"Yes, thank you, but there is no left turn, you daft thing!" Winifred said in a more forceful tone. "I'll just continue on straight and see what I find. I'll take the next left turn if you're so set on it." She continued driving, looking for the elusive left turn her GPS had been talking about. She was ready to be done driving for the evening and her GPS had told her she was only a mile from Lake Flannery. Then again her GPS had also told her that there had been a left turn.
"You have passed your turn. Please turn around."
"Well, you don't have to take that tone with me! There's nothing at all personal about it, you know. You just wanted me to make a left turn when there clearly was none," she continue to speak to her GPS. She'd long come to terms with her insanity on her long road trip across the unnecessarily large country that was the United States, holding conversations with her GPS the entire way. She should have just flown, she supposed, but she hadn't actually realized that she was going to be visiting Todd so that defeated that thought.
"You have passed your turn. Please turn around."
"Yes, thank you. I got that part," Winifred muttered to herself and drove on.
It was a good 30-40 minutes before Winifred found herself pulling into the drive of a barn-shaped house of a color that was completely indeterminable in the dark. Something pale colored, but it could have been pale pink for all Winifred knew. It didn't look much more than gray in the limited light. Winifred looked at her watch to double check the time as she opened her car door. It said it was 7pm which translated to 10pm East coast time. It was a little late, but Todd had always been a bit of a night owl and there was light streaming from the windows so she could assume that either she was at the wrong house or that he was awake. She had to admit that she hoped it was the latter, but if it was the former she could at least ask where he lived. It seemed to be a small community and everyone always knew where everyone lived in those, didn't they?
Though Winifred may have wished she had a bit more of a bounce in her step as she walked toward the front door of the house she was a little sluggish. She'd been driving for hours and was exhausted to be completely honest, though that was likely to change when she saw Todd for the first time in... oh, what was it now? Three years? Three years! It had really been that long! How had they fallen out of touch so badly, she wondered. They'd once been inseparable.
Winifred's mind moved through some of the ridiculous times they'd had together as she raised her hand to tap on the door that was presumably Todd's and grinned at her memories until her excitement got the better of you. Trying her hardest not to smile too much and even harder not to squirm in anticipation, Winifred tapped her feet to divert her energy. The look on his face. Oh, she couldn't wait to see the look on his face when he saw her stood there suppressing a smile. He was going to think he'd gone completely mad for a moment there.
