Cody grins as he opens the door for Pendleton. It’s nice, seeing him here, not that he never comes—it just tends to be the other way around. Being an interim captain is hard, even when he’s got a partner. He misses his friend, and it shows in the way his hug lingers longer than it usually does when it comes to Pendleton, no protest from the gunner as he rests his chin on Cody's shoulder. “Hey,” he greets, ushering him out of the hallway, “What did you bring?” "I found some nail polish, think Noa left it there by accident some time." From his pocket he digs out two glass vials, the cylinder top black: red and purple. "She probably needs them back." He kind of liked the colours, had them decorating his desk as paperweights until now. “She probably hasn’t even noticed they’re gone. She has so many of them,” Cody takes them from him anyways and holds them up to the light, “These are actually pretty cool. I used to let her do my nails before a race, like a good luck charm.” Sometimes, he was nostalgic for the simplicity of those days. Pendleton frowns, not his usual displeased expression, but that when he is about to fire off some biting comment that he doesn't really mean. Not when it comes to Cody. "Why? It's so hard to get off." Good luck charms had to be easier to store than nail paint; bright colours chipping, the constant need to repaint; all too high maintenance. “It’s not that hard with remover,” He shrugs, a sheepish smile on his face, “You don’t like nail polish?” "What sort of question is that?" Bristling at the thought of having to form an opinion on nail polish. Which he did not use or own, not directly. And at this point Cody was an enigma, his fluid friendship with Noa(wouldn't it be nice to have something like that?) that he stumbled into now and again. “It’s just a question,” Cody’s brows knit together, confused. “Come on, let me paint your nails. I’m not very good at it, but it’ll still be fun.” Pen's better sense of judgement is threatening to weigh in, have him storm back to Kamikaze and ignore the whole nail polish conversation. It makes him feel uncomfortable, but he doesn't understand why. It just does, all the little things that push him out of his comfort zone are like needles. It's Cody so Pen lingers, undecided. "Fun." The word is echoed back with no enthusiasm. “Yeah,” Cody grins, briefly. It fades after a moment and he glances at the gunner, eyes filled with concern, “We don’t have to though, if you don’t want to. There’s a million other things we can do or not do, if that’s what you prefer?” Pendleton hesitates, the concern making him squirm some more. "No, we can do that. I mean, you can do that because I won't do yours." There is a tentative bite at those last words, actually intended to avoid disaster. Pen has never painted anyone's nails and he cannot see it going well if he tried on Cody. He would rather not do that to Cody. For a second, Cody looks mildly wounded(a bubble of panic begins in Pen's stomach). When his brain catches up, he grins, “Don’t worry, I’m bad at it too. You don’t have to do mine, but I promise that’s fun too.” He fails to notice that what is fun for him, does not often match up with what is fun for Pen. But for the sake of friendship(or something like it) Pen agrees with no protest. "Just make sure it is all off before I return to Kamikaze." He rubs the back of his neck, "I don't want them to see." As if this was all part of wanting to fit in with his crew, wanting to be more mature(more trustworthy, more something). A constant struggle, wanting to fit in without admitting it to himself. “We can borrow some remover from Noa,” Cody agrees, his smile at a blinding 1000-watts. Pen can never deny Cody anything when he is looking like that. He holds up the two polishes, “Which colour?” "Purple." It reminded him of Kamikaze after all. “Dude,” Cody uncapped the purple vial and grinned, sitting down beside the gunner, “Just wait and see, this is going to look so awesome.” |
