Who: Rhia & Ireland
What: Not!Date
Where: Ganymede.
When: Today!
Warnings: Rhia ♥
The big blonde wall that was Ireland Rhodes was hard to miss. For the Singapore Sling's petite gunner, Ireland's frame might as well was a sail mast. Rhia trailed several paces behind him, weaving through the pedestrians with natural-born grace and practiced stealth. The fun exercise in pursuit-of-a-suspect (she would also call it stalking but that sounded so negative) was abandoned only when Ireland slowed and stopped outside a shop, eyes fixed on the window display of colourful candy. Rhia bounced up behind him, tapped his left shoulder and ducked to the right. She beamed up at him - a good twelve inches - and conveniently blocked his way. Which caused something awkward to coil inside and he lifted one hand in greeting, this face he knew(mostly as Kirby's gunner friend, but not part of the '68 pack). "Rhia, hey." There were questions lingering in the tip of his tongue but where to begin? A simple start was, perhaps, the easiest. "Shopping?" He ventured, glancing at her hands to see if there were any shopping bags tangled in her arms and fingers. The gunner shook her head and raised the putrid green smoothie she had in one hand. It was a disgusting colour but healthy and surprisingly tasty. Rhia missed Kirby and her smoothies; now she had to make them herself and she hated washing up. It was simply easier to buy them while she was out. "Just killing time around town." She turned to see what had captured the blonde's attention and made a dull exclamation. "-oh." Candy. Rhia didn't know what she was expecting. Her gaze returned to Ireland's with a bemused expression - her neck was going to get sore soon. He didn't seem like the type to have a sweet tooth. And he wasn't, but he bought gifts for mother and his mother had a very sweet tooth, like his brother. "You're not looking to get into trouble, right?" A wide smile, Ireland was an easy study: smiles, relaxed gesture, inoffensive shopping bag. An exasperated sigh. "What trouble could an angel like myself possibly get into?" Rhia hooked an arm through Ireland's and lead the way towards the store (not that she had any chance of dragging him with her). "Let's go!" But Ireland was easy to cajole into most things, so when tugged he went along as if Rhia had the strength to pull him along. The store was new, opened while they had been off planet and Ireland had made a note to stop by when he had time but things had gotten complicated. Elysian's return from Pluto, Tyler's appearance. Even Ireland's placid demeanour was shaken, slipping slightly at the edges. "Going to buy something?" "No," Rhia laughed, blissfully unaware of the goings-on inside Ireland's mind. "I'm going to watch you buy something." Which Ireland thought would be boring for her but if that was what Rhia wanted, he was not going to shoo her off. The jingling bell that announced their custom was quickly followed by a low whistle of appreciation. The smell. The colours. Rhia flashed Ireland with a saucy smile. "Lead the way, Rho." "Ireland." He interceded with a small nod (Rho sounded cuter she thought but did not say), before taking a rather long time in picking out a significantly large box of assorted chocolate and candies. Rhia did not correct the salesperson when a wrong assumption had been made about their relationship to each other. Then he picked out a smaller candy bag, star-shaped sugar confectionary for Star. No particular reason for his purchase, just the pleasure of giving a gift to someone else. From that shop on it was a pleasant enough afternoon, at least Ireland thought so. A few more shops were visited but no further purchases were made by either of them and by the time their stomachs had begun protesting, he had escorted Rhia into a cafe down by the peer. She gave no indication that she was familiar with the area, or the little dockside attraction that served the best ice cream in at least five blocks. It seemed that lately he kept coming back to this area, memories sitting, heavy and sharp against his ribs. "Ganymede has a lot to do." His spoon dug into half-melted ice cream he was having dessert. Rhia agreed wholeheartedly. There was no place like home; and certainly after a month long voyage on Pluto, Ganymede felt like paradise. She rested her chin on her hands. "Aren't you from Gany? I can't remember. Or maybe I never knew." Before he could answer, a thought occurred to her and she rambled on, "How come you're not married off already? This is like one of the best dates I've had in a long time." The navigator nearly inhaled the ice cream, along with the spoon at the question. His brain sent warning signals that this had just become dangerous territory(and no guns or violence were imminent, this was another sort of trouble). "Glad you think so." Uncertainty laced there because he hadn't really thought of this as a date, then again he also hadn't thought about it that other night and, well. Shit. Ireland's reaction was almost comical if it wasn't also slightly hurtful to her pride and ego. Rhia knew that they were not on an actual date - she had all but ambushed him into spending the day with her after all. Still. The unflattering reaction silenced the quick correction on the tip of her tongue. At least for now. Ireland sat back, fingers turning one of the silver bands he wore on his left hand. "Don't know." He thought of Tyler back in Tijuana, "People seem to think it is important, but-" A shrug, "-isn't getting a joint place sufficient proof of commitment? Or adopting a pet? Or having children? Unless, of course, you both wanted a ceremony." Rhia's gaze lingered on the silver bands, and imagined the many stories and scenarios behind it. There were actually none, just gifts or things he liked. Rhia kept a flirty smile on her face and said nothing. The pregnant pause that followed was like a staring game and she didn't plan on breaking. His face was not a closed book, uncertainty and perhaps even a flicker of embarrassment made themselves present the longer Rhia kept staring at him. Ireland was unsure of many things, but he was pretty certain that she was teasing him right now. Or something along those lines, and he didn't mind losing the game, breaking the silence first. "I'll get the bill." Before pushing himself up and heading to the counter to do just that. Rhia's face broke into an expression of embarrassment and guilt. She felt a growing sense of contrition as she watched Ireland's retreating back, but not enough to stop herself from admiring the view. Probably for the best that Ireland was unaware of the lovely backwards view he could provide. Once the bill was paid and the two were on their way back to the Singapore Sling, Rhia squeezed his arm (she was still shamelessly latching onto him, and he was simply letting her). "I know this isn't a date, but I had fun anyway." she finally admitted. Ireland's smile was disgustingly happy at those words and he dropped a hand on her shoulder, "I had a good time too, Rhia." The smile was mirrored on the girl's face. She reached up on her tiptoes and gave Ireland a crushing hug with her arms around his neck, returned awkwardly because of the bags he was holding. Despite her earlier comment, she gave him a quick peck on his cheek, which had him tensing up and clearing his throat as he stepped back. Oops, Rhia thought to herself, and giggled with amusement. Ireland was such a cutie. "See you later. Take care, yeah?" Of course, she was a Killjoy and there could not be many things that frightened them, or something. His brain was running in a circle of slight embarrassment and the urge to go(he was running late). A series of quick nods were given. "Bye!" she waved and hugged herself, smiling satisfyingly. Ireland had provided a wonderful distraction from the upcoming Killjoy assessments. Pause. "OH MY GOD." |
