John Mitchell is on the fringes looking in ([info]onthefringes) wrote in [info]wariscomingcom,

[Filtered to any man who has successfully wooed a woman... except Lucifer. Who probably has managed that at least once BUT WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR HIS ADVICE, OKAY?!]

I am taking my girlfriend out on our first official, proper date.

It has to be good. And I mean actually good.

I'm from Dublin, and lived in the UK. To us a proper date is a pack of Doritos and a pint down the pub. I'm figuring I need to be far more impressive.

Someone give me some advice here, how do I take her on a date worthy of how amazing she is?

Okay so what does she like to do?

Gotta admit my winning the girl took time, effort, a mystical seal and loosing everything I ever wanted.

But she generally likes when I take her somewhere nice, just us, focus on her, dinner, walking in the evening, all of it

In terms of us hanging out, I know all the things she likes to do. But actually taking her out, that's different. And I'm not even sure if she knows, since we're both trying to make sure this relationship is different to things we've screwed up in the past.

Did you get back what you wanted? Or did you have to redefine what it was you wanted from life?

So candlelit dinner isn't completely cheesy?

Oh you put the effort in. Don't make it just another night in. Tell her to get all dressed up, pick somewhere fancy.

I got the only prize that mattered. Just took me a long time to realize it was her and not the titles or the money.

...of course here I'm taking back the title. Who says you can't have it all

Its not cheesy if its done right. Though if you have someone singing 'That's Amore' then you've crossed a line

Fancy dinner. I can do that. and not eat the public Treating her like a lady.

Titles and money are nice and all, but someone who will actually stick by you through the bad times as well as the good is worth a lot more.

Hey, good on you.

I wouldn't even know how to find someone to sing that damn song anyway.

I agree with the above. Make it entirely about her and whatever you do don't give her a pint and a bag of chips.

Then again, if you do something you normally wouldn't she might see through that.

But is the whole wining and dining thing too cliche?

The things I would normally do when taking a woman out has never exactly worked. For various reasons. I want to do it right this time, make Lydia feel completely worshiped, because she's amazing. So I think that means doing something different.

That doesn't mean it's not enjoyed. It's a cliche for a reason.

Though somehow I think with Lydia you're on the right track there. Different is good. And try not to over think it.

Okay, so I can do that, find a classy restaurant, do the gentleman thing.

I just know guys have been jerks to her in the past and I want to show her she deserves so much more than that.

You need a less sarcastic answer than one involving potatoes don't you?

You know what to do Mitchell. More I expect than I would nowadays

No potatoes.

You. Teach me how to dance.

And you managed to get Alex to fall in love with you, how did you manage that?

...what really?

You'd have to actually pay attention.

Honestly, I still don't know. It definitely wasn't the 'first blood in 50 years' first date

I can pay attention! I listen to all your rehab stuff, don't I!

Okay, yes, I don't think any date can go worse than that one did. No offense.

It depends. What does she really enjoy doing? Is she the type of person who would enjoy a night out at a top dollar restaurant or would she be more interested in watching monster trucks jump on each other for reasons I've yet to fully understand?

I don't think she's a monster trucks type. She's never mentioned monster trucks. How can I bring up monster trucks to ask and why would anyone want to watch those anyway?

Lois likes them. I still don't get why. But, see, she might have a hobby or interest that you don't expect her to have. Something that she'd really love to go and do with you, even if it baffles you in every possible way. You should definitely ask her.

You're right, I definitely need to ask her if she likes something... I shouldn't call it something 'strange' right? How often does Lois make you see monster trucks?!

I think it depends on the girl. I couldn't possibly have won my wife over with your typical dinner and dancing deal. I had to cater to her interests, the things she liked. But if she's into the typical forms of romance, you should be all right with the nice dinner out and the dancing in general.

I'm aiming for classy. Because she deserves it, even though she thinks she doesn't. I've just never had to do classy before.

Then go for classy! Maybe you'll surprise yourself and find out you actually like classy, too? And want to do it more? No idea, our idea of classy is we order in Indian instead of Chinese.

I'm basically the worst person in the world to give advice on this. Typically you should do the date thing before getting her knocked up but you don't really have that problem and I don't even know how Nora tolerated me. But a lot of it is getting to know the things she likes and meeting that. Something bigger than just drinks in a bar but maybe not quite hot air balloon rides.

Hot air balloon rides are a thing? Seriously? I don't know how Nina tolerated George either. But then half the time I'm not entirely sure how George tolerated Nina. But when they got over being idiots they were amazing together.

Oh yeah. You can get them going over most landscapey type places. We didn't have them a lot in Boston--they did do helicopter rides, though? And whale watching, no idea. But they did in New York. Seems sort of romantic, I guess, unless one of you is afraid of heights and then it's just all downhill from there.

Yeah well, I'm awkward and Nora's crazy. There's a reason it didn't work out.
