Pike just pressed another soft kiss to her temple and held her. He didn't tell her not to cry, even in that reassuring way most people said it. That had always been kind of a stupid thing to say to someone, in his opinion. If you were crying, there was probably a pretty damn good reason, and you didn't need to hear someone telling you otherwise. Instead, he just made soft, soothing noises and tightened his hold on her.
Never once did he let go of her hand. He didn't let his gentle grip on it waver. Not once, despite all the shaking. He felt that was an important gesture, not just physically but symbolically. It was a connection, something he was betting they both direly needed.
