Between the incessant cackling and the pain that was threatening to take his consciousness, Jason heard a voice erupt from somewhere nearby. Female. Not Kori. Something about his mask...? Jason clenched his mouth shut and pulled at it again, fingers swiping over the trigger that was meant to unlock it. Again and again he tried, body twisting in agony, the unfamiliar presence beside him all but forgotten until - finally - the release button clicked. The Joker had tampered with more than one aspect of his mask, it seemed, and making sure that Jason Todd got a full dose of his toxin before anyone was able to pry him free had undoubtedly been at the top of his to-do list when he'd gotten started. The hood toppled off, a green cloud spilling from within as it spiraled into the grass, and Jason found that he was finally able to breathe. He'd have been able to appreciate the intake of oxygen a lot more if not for everything that had led up to it.
The mask was off, but the damage had been done. Jason was covered in chemical burns, right down to the neck. As bad as it looked, it wasn't the worst of it. While the burns ate away at his skin, the Joker's toxin had injected itself into his lungs, rapidly poisoning him from the inside. Jason tried to move, groping in the dark for the antidote that he kept handy in case of Sudden Joker Death, but his vision was going dark and his body wasn't cooperating.
Normally, this was the part where Jason would insert a few swears. Maybe a sarcastic declaration of frustration or two, even something especially witty about his impending demise...
Instead, he went eerily still, leaving his fate in the hands of a woman he hadn't been able to identify and probably would never live to see at all.
Everything went black. He could hear the Joker's laughter fading from his helmet, recording coming to an end. He'd done it again. The Joker had killed him again. He -- wait. Something felt...different? The white-hot pain ripping through his skin, it didn't feel so...? Jason drew in a sharp breath and opened his eyes. His sight was still off, but he could make out someone kneeling over him. Blonde. Definitely not Kori.
