Pike snorted at that. "Research buddies. Boy do I wish I had those." He tore off a generous bite of his pizza. "S'the problem with demon hunters. Nobody trusts anybody. There's no unifying thing, and everybody has their own beliefs and ideas about how things should be done. We tear each other down as often as we get along."
He swallowed, washed it down with the rest of his first beer, and popped the top on his second. "So we work alone, mostly. Team-ups pretty much only happen for the big stuff, and even then it can be a disaster. Sometimes that's a good thing, you can get stuff done without having to consult a bunch of different people. Other times..." For just the flash of a second, guilt and inward-directed anger flashed across his eyes, but it was gone a second later. "Other times one person's interpretation of the clues isn't quite right. You end up in a situation you didn't want to be in." Apparently this was a personal soapbox for him, but he reined it in.
He paused for a moment, chewing and swallowing another bite of pizza. He grinned back at her. "You should see the looks on their faces when they realize a puny human just shoved a stake into their heart from the back of a moving motorcycle. Can totally turn a bad day good again."
