He sat up a bit more. “When I’m from, we’re a lot more optimistic. I mean, you have people like Bones who live for pessimism, but on the whole we look for the best to happen. We explore space to see what’s there, to meet new cultures. Not everything is going to work out in our favor, but we keep trying. That’s how I look at this. Right now, not the best timing. Maybe later it’ll be better. Maybe he’ll come back and you’ll go back to him, maybe you won’t. But nothing is plotted out in stone right now. So we have time, and we can just wait and see what happens.”
Wait and see wasn't something Rose was great at. That sounded a lot like patience, which she was in short supply of. She knew she should probably be grateful that he was being so cool about everything, though. She was, actually, but at the same time it just reinforced what an amazing guy he was. That definitely didn't make him any easier to resist.
Realized she'd been quiet for probably too long after he finished talking, Rose made herself nod. "Okay," she agreed. She took a deep breath before she forced herself to add. "You shouldn't wait for me, though. If you have a chance to be happy with someone else, you should take it, because you deserve that." He deserves better than you, a quiet voice in her head added. At the moment, Rose couldn't help agreeing.
He had his doubts on how well she was going to do with wait and see but when he wanted to he could be amazingly stubborn. If there was ever going to be an actual chance of anything between them working for the long run she’d need to be in a place where she didn’t feel guilty about Dimitri, and that took time. He’d give her time, even if she thought he shouldn’t.
