Thea wasn’t even sure why she’d reached out to Ben on the network. They’d only really talked a couple of times, there were other people she knew better if she wanted the company. Maybe that was the point, though. Or maybe it was just knowing she could get sent home at any minute and her days were apparently numbered once she did. Maybe it was thinking for a few heart wrenching moments that Roy was seriously dead as she’d watched everything fold on screen. Maybe it was watching Ollie forced to choose between his own life, his own freedom and everyone else. Maybe it was just a feeling that she needed to do something and this was an infinitely better idea than the other her deciding to make out with a guy who was working for the enemy a few weeks earlier. There was something about watching yourself get stabbed to death with a sword on national television that made you feel your own mortality. It made her want to take risks, to take chances. And, yeah, it kind of made her want to get away from the people who knew her best. She could only imagine how Ollie and Sara would look at her. Even the others she knew here, if they knew what was going on, would have a certain look. The fact that Ben didn’t really know her that well, yet, was freeing in a way. And he seemed nice. He probably was nice. He was so different from Roy and that was good. Because she didn’t want to think about Roy right now, especially after what had been playing out on her television screen the last couple of weeks. She wasn’t sure what she had in mind when she asked Ben to hang out with her after her show. Aside from something that would get her out of the house. There was only so much showing around she could do at this hour, but she was determined to make it work. An idea came to her and 20 minutes later she was knocking on his door with a bag filled with various kinds of junk food hanging from her other arm as she waited. Ben had only talked to Thea a couple of times over the network, but she'd been friendly and nice, and he appreciated that. He'd been here for more than a month, but he'd just sort of rolled with the punches given, but that didn't mean one or two of them hadn't landed. Mainly he was in some sort of alternate reality where his mother was alive, but remembered him quite a bit younger than he currently was and where his cousin was also alive - and technically also remembered him a bit younger than he currently was - but apparently not a Sith. Well, at least Ben didn't think so. But he had been. That was a nut that Ben was still trying to crack open, whilst trying to figure out if his mom was safe, if he should tell her, if Jacen could be even remotely the smallest bit trusted… it as a lot of 'if's'.. Thea was less of an if. She was cute, she was friendly, and she'd put up with his long line of questioning about Peep jousting, even contacting him later to ask about the results. And while Ben couldn't say that his last relationship interest had been exactly stellar - Vestara had been a bad idea probably. A girl raised Sith on a planet of Sith and a Jedi was just not something that had ever been likely to work and he should have been clever enough to see it. And maybe he had been, he'd just not wanted to - he'd hoped maybe she could make different choices. Thea was not a Sith. At least as best Ben could tell. And while there did seem to be things here that were distinctly not of the good, Ben was reasonably certain Thea wasn't one of them. He supposed there was no time like the present to find out. When he opened the door to her knock, he'd pulled on a clean shirt already and he had his lightsaber attached to his belt, and he took in the bag she was carrying and he gave her a grin. "Are we going on a holiday? If so, you'll have to give me a few minutes to pack a bag." Thea was definitely not a sith. She was just a girl. A girl who’d been through a lot lately and who had been through a lot of changes, but at the end of the day she wasn’t that different from most people her age. Aside from the fact that he life and her loved ones lives tended to be in pretty much constant danger at home. She’d lost both of her parents or who she thought of as her parents. It was just her and Ollie here. She’d watched as their lives unfolded on tv, she’d found out about Sara and what she’d done, even if it had been against her own will. Here in Lawrence, though, she alternated between running a club and trying to be a regular teenanger. Things weren’t always safe, but it was disturbingly more normal than life had been at home before this. Spending time with people who weren’t Oliver and Sara felt infinitely less complicated, though, especially given the latest episode of that damn show. Thea found herself actually smiling and shaking her head at his teasing when he opened the door. “Oh, yeah, I thought we’d take off to Paris in my private jet,” she joked back. Technically, they probably could. Ollie had wished for the Queen estate and she’d wished for the club. They had the kind of money they’d had before everything went really, really wrong. She had something a little more local in mind, though. She just couldn’t resist playing along. "You know, I half wish you were serious, if only because I'd love the chance to get in a cockpit of one of the planes here," Ben quipped back, but he grabbed a jacket and stepped outside beside her. She hadn't been specific in what she was planning on doing, and he hadn't really asked but he assumed she'd tell him if he needed to dress different or look different somehow. That was still a bit of a work in process as well, because people seemed to dress differently than at home, but he thought he'd figured it out, more or less. He'd always been observant, and Galactic Alliance Guard training had only honed that instinct. For now he shoved his hands in his pockets and looked over at her to give her a good look over in person. She was cute, and he had no idea what had brought the request on, but he wasn't going to say no to it. He'd just do what he'd been doing since he arrived, which was make it up as he went along. He suspected the threat of betrayal was minimum here. "So what were you thinking?" he asked, falling into step beside her. "I'm still figuring out what nightlife looks like in Lawrence, Kansas. So far it's feeling more like Mos Eisley than Corsucant. But I could be just not seeing something completely obvious." “Well, we don’t actually HAVE a private jet, but I bet we could charter something,” she suggested. Not that Thea actually knew how to fly a plane. If he wanted to see Lawrence from the air, though, she figured it would be easy enough to figure it out and make it happen. It was one of the benefits of having the full Queen estate here, including the club and the money she and Ollie had one had at home, before things went to hell. Thinking about home wasn’t what she wanted to be doing right now, so she cut herself off. Thinking of home made her think about the show and that was something she definitely didn’t want to dwell on. Thea grinned when he questioned her on what her plan for the evening was, pushing away any lingering thoughts of what was happening at home. “I thought we’d have a picnic,” she told him. “There’s a lot more quality junk food around here than Peeps. I would be remiss if I didn’t give you a good overview, don’t you think?” "Yeah?" Ben looked over at the idea of chartering a jet, but it felt almost like a topic she didn't want to spend time on and while Ben didn't quite know why, he decided he wouldn't pursue it. That would be something to look into later for on his own, to figure out if it was something he could do. Maybe even a question for Jacen… although Ben didn't know if he even trusted his cousin. No, he did know - he didn't trust his cousin and while Jacen hadn't moved to harm his mother or Ben himself Ben wasn't about to put himself in Jacen's hands for anything. Everyone had their topics that were uneasy, and Ben didn't really want either of them to dwell on them. The idea of a picnic at night though, amused him. It was, oddly enough, not something he'd ever done. Eaten under the cover of darkness, sure, but never just for fun. Always because the mission had required it and usually because lighting glowrods, or stopping in daylight would have drawn too much attention to where he was and what he was doing. "And you wouldn't want to be remiss," he gave her a quick grin before glancing at the bag she was carrying. "So that'd be the full bag then. Can I carry it for you? It looks like it's kind of full." “Yeah. I bet some of the techies could even fake a pilot's license. I mean, not for me, I don’t actually know how to fly a plane, but they could probably do it for you.” It wasn’t so much the topic of planes she didn’t want to get into as it was home. Maybe she should just stop watching, but it was like a train wreck. You knew it was going to be really horrible, but somehow you still couldn’t make yourself stop looking. She couldn’t exactly unsee it, either, but she could try to distract herself with something else, which was the whole reason she was out here. So she put on a smile, hoping that if she acted like everything was fine, it would be. “No, I wouldn't want to be remiss. I’m considering it my personal mission to educate you in the ways of this world.” Or, worlds like it, since this one wasn’t really home for her, anyway. It was close enough. She smiled at his offer to carry the bag and she almost shook her head. Thea was definitely capable of carrying it, herself, but it was actually nice that he was offering. It was gentlemanly, so after considering it for a moment, she nodded and held it out for him to take. “It’s not that bad, but I’d hate to rob you of a chance to be all chivalrous,” she agreed. "I've never flown a plane here," he said. "But I'm pretty confident I could figure it out. I've flown a lot of things, including space worthy ships, and then there was 'ship' which was a semi-sentient, Dark Side, Sith ship… and that was its own thing completely." And that he realised got into more of his life at home than he really wanted to. He wondered how much Thea knew of any of it. Jacen was here, and had been for some time, so it was possible if she knew Jacen, that she knew some of it. Or if she'd read the books that apparently chronicled his life and the life of his family, but for the moment he didn't really want to find out. His life at home was complicated. Jacen was complicated. The fact that he still didn't know what to tell his mother was complicated. Thea… was not complicated, and for that he was pretty certain she was an Angel. Whatever the reason for having suddenly asked him to accompany her out for the evening, he'd take it and he had every intention of enjoying it and not bringing up complicated things if he could at all avoid them. "I mean, Jedi Knight, and also pretty certain my Father would sock my ears if I wasn't at least pretending to be chivalrous or something." He grinned and took the bag from her and peeked into it. "So what else should I anticipate here within this bag. The sickly sweet, sugar rabbits and chicks known as peeps were quite a highlight and it may be difficult to top them you realize." "Pretty confident?" she teased. She honestly didn't know much about Ben, except that he was from Star Wars, only she had only really seen the movies once and she didn't think he'd been in them. She'd seen Jacen around, too, enough to be on friendly terms with him and say hello if they passed on the street, but that was about it and she liked it that way. Seeing people she knew from TV she'd watched at home was cool, in a way, but it was nice getting to know people the old fashioned way, too. "On a scale of 1 to we might crash into a corn field, how confident is pretty confident?" Thea was instantly glad she'd asked him to hang out. She was already having fun, just talking to him. Maybe avoiding the subject of why she'd needed to get out of the house wasn't very healthy, but this was actually pretty responsible as far as her history of bad life choices when upset, went. Seriously, she was kind of proud of herself for the fact that she wasn't doing anything really stupid, considering her track record. That whole chivalry thing was nice and she had to admit the Jedi Knight thing was kind of hot. Ben was pretty cute, too. She'd definitely noticed that, but it was complicated, with her feelings for Roy and everything else. She was trying not to rush into anything, but that didn't stop her from flirting a little. "Let me play with your lightsaber and I might really be impressed," she joked. Well, half-joked. Malcolm had trained her to use a sword, so she probably wouldn't cut anything important off and actually getting to use a lightsaber did sound kind of cool. She laughed at his description of the Peeps, shaking her head. "Oh, there's no topping Peeps, but you'll just have to wait and see what I have in store for you," she returned playfully. The Peeps had been a little on the silly side, and the fact that he'd carried on with the jousting situation and then posted pictures on the network… well, maybe this was more what it was like to have something akin to a normal life like his Dad had always wanted him to have. Maybe it took leaving his own galaxy and landing on a planet who knew where to make that a reality. Or maybe this place would end up being just as strange as home. Who knew? One thing he certainly knew was that he was interested in what Thea might have up her sleeve. Ben grinned. It was almost impossible for him to not pull out confident where flying was concerned. "Well, I didn't know how to fly Ship at all, learned it totally on the go and I managed to take off, and fly it back to Coruscant, so I'd say - we shouldn't be spending much time in a corn field. Unless you just want to wander the corn fields, and then, hey, all you have to do is ask." |
