Jemma had never been more relieved in her life to wake up in her bed in Lawrence. Okay, that wasn’t quite true. She was more relieved after the seal had sent her and some others to the Weeping Angel house. So, technically she hadn’t been more relieved in eight months. Not in the year that she’d been here. Which in itself was still a weird thing to comprehend. After throwing up a quick post to the network, she dressed back in her own clothes before padding down the stairs to the kitchen. Tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, she put the kettle on. She needed a decent cup of tea, which apparently didn’t exist in American Soap Opera’s. Unfortunately. Which meant she now had an intense craving for it. She also put the coffee pot on, as she heard movement in the apartment. “Skye? Is that you?” She called out. Looking forward to seeing her best friend. She’d missed her. *** Skye had been pretty worried about Jemma, even after they’d seen her on tv and figured out she was more or less safe. She’d been working almost nonstop to try and free her friend, but nothing she tried worked and she was starting to get frustrated. Watching the finale of their show, hadn’t helped. Now she had to worry about the version of Jemma that was there, at home, too, and truth be told she could really use her best friend to talk to and she once more felt caught in the middle between her boyfriend and the rest of her team. It was one of the reasons she wanted to get out of town with him for a while. She’d been packing when she heard the noise coming from the kitchen, so she hadn’t looked on the network yet. Cautiously, Skye made her way out of her room and now the hall. The chances of it being some kind of intruder weren’t that high, but you could never be too careful in this place. When she heard Jemma’s voice, though, she dropped her guard and picked up her pace, rushing into the kitchen. “Jemma! You’re back!” Skye closed the distance between them, pulling her into a fierce hug. She was so relieved, so happy to see her. *** Jemma smiled as Skye entered the kitchen, and hugged her back just as fiercely. She knew she’d missed a lot. Three episodes of their show, and the new Avengers movie. She worried that there was bad news from home. That, something terrible had happened to Fitz, or the others. Even though most of them were in Lawrence with them, she still worried, especially about the members of the team that weren’t there. “It’s good to see you, Skye” She said, as she pulled out of the hug. And it really was, she’d missed her far too much. She’s missed all of them far too much. It worried her that she cared that much about so many people. Considering everything that had happened both at home, and here. Smiling, Jemma turned and poured Skye a coffee, as well as making her tea. “What did I miss?” She queried, making her voice sound light and jovial. Hiding the turmoil inside, she could tell that Skye had been worried about something. She also remembered exactly what had happened in the last season finale for their show, and she knew she’d missed it. *** When Skye pulled away, there were tears in her eyes. She couldn’t help remembering how she’d been just sucked up by that alien artifact on the show. Logically, she knew that this Jemma was fine, but she also knew the seal could send her back at any moment and they wouldn’t know what happened to her for months. On top of that, she’d really missed her. Blinking back her tears, Skye took the coffee Jemma had poured her and forced her own smile. She’d just gotten back. The last thing she needed to deal with was everything that had happened since she’d been sent into the television by that stupid archangel guy. “Oh, you know, the usual,” she said vaguely. She was usually a little more skilled at lying and she knew Jemma would see right through her, but she also wasn’t that anxious to talk about certain things. *** Jemma instantly noticed the tears in Skye’s eyes. And concern showed all over her face. She’d obviously missed a lot more than Skye was letting on. Her friend was trying to be strong. Probably because Jemma had only just got back. But, she could deal with it. That place was annoying more than anything. She’d spent most of her time worried about what was happening here, and back home. “Skye? It doesn’t sound like it was just the usual.” She started, resting a comforting hand on Skye’s arm. “What aren’t you telling me?” Was it Fitz, oh she hoped it wasn’t Fitz. He’d been through enough as it was, and she’d only just worked out what it was she felt for him. But, he wasn’t here and there was nothing she could do about that now. *** "I'm okay," she lied, "I just missed you." A part of her did want to talk about everything that was bothering her, she wanted to confide in someone, but that involved actually talking about it and that was something she wasn't sure she was ready to do. She and Grant had agreed to ignore that elephant in the room the night the finale had aired and focused on distracting each other. Since then, she'd deflected any attempts from him or anyone else to get her to talk about what they'd all seen. There was a lot about it that troubled her, beyond just wondering what had happened to Jemma. Her friend's face twin was listed as a regular for the next season and she tried to take control before in that. It meant she wasn't dead, at least. -- Jemma wasn’t convinced. But, she wasn’t going to push her. Instead she just pulled her back into a hug. “I missed you too.” She murmured into her friend shoulder, realising that she would just have to work it out for herself. It was probably the show that was the issue, anyway. And, if it had anything to do with Fitz, she trusted that Skye would have told her that. Which meant maybe it was something to do with Skye’s mother. But, she knew that her friend would talk to her when she was ready. “Ward said you were going on holiday?” *** Skye knew Jemma would find out what had happened on the show eventually. Either someone would tell her or she’d look it up on the Internet. She didn’t want to get into it just yet, though, not when she’d just finally gotten back, so she was glad when Jemma changed the subject. “Yeah, things have been kind of tense between him and May. I thought getting him out of town would be a good idea.” Tense would be an understatement and while a part of her had wanted to take some time away, herself, too, a big reason she’d suggested it was to get Ward away from everyone. Preferably before he and May decided to beat the crap out of one another. *** Jemma nodded, completely understanding the reasoning. There had been tension building between Ward and May ever since May had arrived. And, if she was honest, she was quite relieved that Ward wasn’t going to be around for a while. Her memories being updated had not been a pleasant experience for her. And, his antagonistic attitude hadn’t been helping matters. His paranoia regarding her motives was beginning to really grate on her nerves. As if she’d do that to Skye. “Well, you have fun. And don’t miss us too much.” She said, smiling at her friend. *** “I’ll try not to.” Skye actually gave her friend a genuine smile at that. She knew she would miss her while she was gone, but she knew getting away for a while was the right thing to do and she was grateful that Jemma understood. She knew, too, that Jemma didn’t entirely approve of her relationship with Ward and that he wasn’t really her favorite person by a long shot. Skye didn’t really know how to fix that, but maybe the time away would help, for all of them. It was a lot to get past on all sides, especially when they were all forced to watch their lives play out on television week after week. “When I get back, I swear you and me are going to have a girls day, just the two of us, and we’ll catch up on everything,” she added, giving her friend another quick hug before she started back toward her bedroom to finish up her packing. It was bad timing that she was leaving just when Jemma was back, but she still thought that getting away was what she needed to do. |
