The weather in Miami was warm, much warmer than it had been in Lawrence. It was humid, too, but Rose couldn't help appreciating the warmth of the sun. Even though she had been on a human schedule for months now, winter in Kansas hadn't brought a lot of sunlight, definitely not like this. The humidity combined with the heat left her hair damp with sweat, although most of it was up, away from her face and neck. Long hair in a fight was a definite liability. The road trip here has been nice, too. It had given her and Dimitri plenty of time to talk on the way. Mostly, they'd talked business. Somehow, they both seemed to be avoiding the subject of the cabin and what had happened between them. Ever since talking to Regina, she'd wanted to ask him about what it meant for them, but she held back. A part of her was afraid to hear his answers. They had plenty of other things to discuss, though, and focusing on the task ahead of them had made it easier to shove all of her problems aside. She was hurt over Lissa's attitude toward her, even if she knew it was justified. She wanted to make things up to her, but she had no clue where to start and she couldn't afford to think about it now when she and Dimitri had a job to do. It had taken time to follow the leads they had and track down their target, but they'd done it and now found themselves in the middle of a fight. It was a demon, nothing Rose hadn't faced before during her time in this world, but that didn't make it less of a challenge. Rose was doing her best to keep the demon busy so Dimitri could recite the words that would eject it from its human host. Demons rivaled Strigoi in speed and strength, but Rose held her own at first, both giving and taking some good hits. There would be bruises later, but she didn't feel them now, in the midst of the battle. Suddenly, the demon got the upper hand and Rose found herself on the defensive. Dimitri was about halfway through the exorcism, she thought. It was obvious this thing needed to dispatch her quickly, so it could move on to him before he finished. All Rose had to do was hold out a little while longer. She did her best to dodge, but the demon hit her with enough force to make her see stars. Rose staggered and shook her head, trying to clear it as she tried to get back on the offensive, but before she could counter with her own attempt, it managed to get a good hold on her and the next she knew, she was flying at a wall. A very solid wall made of bricks. Pain shot through her at she hit the wall. Black and white spots danced in her vision. She tried to shake it off, tried to get up, but then the demon was on her, slamming her head against the pavement with a force that knocked her out completely. |
