It was good that spring was starting to make itself known, Molly thought as she let Evey lead the way down the familiar path on their walk. The trouble with having a dog in the winter was that they still needed to go out and do their business regardless of whether it was rain or shine, hot or cold. She was used to cold and wet, thanks to spending her entire life up until nearly a year ago in England, but it was a vastly better experience going for these walks in the warmer seasons, especially when they went towards the river. That had definitely been one of Evey's favorite destinations, and hers as well, at least until February and the massive Seal induced exodus. It still hurt, but there had been a still growing family of otters to think about and she couldn't ask Georgina to take care of them forever. This was only her second time going there since Khan was taken, and the first since ownership of the cabin and surrounding land had changed hands.
She and Evey made their way to the cabin in near silence, save for an occasional bark from Evey or a rustle of wind through the trees. She'd only gone back herself at the very end of March. None of Khan's things were there anymore, except for the items that she had given him. That was probably only because she was still in Lawrence: if she left they would disappear as well. But it was nice to have reminders still. She'd taken them back with her to Regina's home to stay safe, but then she'd started to worry about the cabin itself. Molly had taken over the rental payments, but when people found out it was uninhabited she was afraid there would be a squatter there. In the end she made the owner an offer for the cabin and surrounding land, and he accepted. So now it was hers, and she had some decisions to make.
At the moment, however, she was letting Evey pull her closer with the occasional side detour. It was just in sight when Evey stopped dead in her tracks and sniffed at the air. Then her ears perked up and she began to bark excitedly, and suddenly she was pulling as hard as she could. Evey was a little dog, but the pull was unexpected and Molly stumbled slightly. "Evey?" she asked, beginning to move at a quicker pace down to the cabin. They got to a tree fifteen feet from the door and Evey stopped before beginning to dig. She didn't really need to; Molly could see the top of a bottle sticking up out of the loose dirt. She knelt down and tugged at it, getting it free. "I suppose we can find a use for this," Molly said, turning it over in her hands. "We can take it inside and clean it up a bit." She stood back up and, in an effort not to bring unneeded dirt into the cabin, began to brush the dirt off, rubbing the bottle gently to get the last few traces gone.
