WHO Caroline Forbes & Stefan Salvatore
(Or one shot)
WHAT Caroline Arrives
WHERE Cemetery
WHEN Friday Morning
RATING/STATUS Medium. Mention of death. Ongoing/oneshot

Terrified - to fill with terror or alarm; make greatly afraid.

Terrified didn’t even cover how Caroline felt as she turned to Stefan asking him for help so she could try and say goodbye to her mother who was already in a coma. She’d missed the moments before to say goodbye to her own Mother. Her mother, the last family she had living. The person that she just never thought she’d have to live without, her Mom. She wanted her Mom to be there for her wedding, for her college graduation, for all of those little moments of her life where a parent should be there.

As she found the memory and went through it with her Mom it felt like her whole world was going to crash down around her, everything was broken, she was broken, she was losing one of the most important people in her whole life, that would always be one of the most important people in her life, no matter what else was to come, her Mom was sort of her rock. They’d been through so much that the fear and pain of knowing she was gone now felt as though a million tiny fire ants were biting at her inside as strings were trying to pull her heart apart slowly and as painfully as possible.

Shutting her eyes as she knew her Mom was going, she expected to open them and see her friends around her, she expected to have them right there for her, and instead that was so far from what she found that she couldn’t even figure out how to hold herself together. She didn’t see the hospital room, no instead she saw a graveyard, and she was lying on the ground, somewhere that really didn’t like anywhere she’d ever been before.

Leaping to her feet she look around, the pain was eating at her, those ants working to try and destroy her slowly, but this was wrong. Something was really wrong. Caroline worked to push her grief aside, her pain aside as she dusted off her white dress and looked around.

“Of course, but allowing me to actually grieve my Mom would be too much to ask!” She exclaimed out loud to one in particular but to everything around her. This had to be because someone snapped her neck or killed her and moved her while she was out right? Where were her friends? Where was Stefan? Elena? Hell where was Damon? Even if she wasn’t the biggest fan of Damon, she knew that he had been friends with her Mom and she knew he’d have been there… so where was everyone now? Where was she?

It was pathetic but she actually was mildly glad that she wasn’t tied up somewhere being tortured again, this wasn’t good, but at least she wasn’t being tortured.

Wiping away the tears on her eyes she started to move towards what looked like the best way to get out of here. Her eyes still puffy from the loss and the pain.

Stefan couldn't help being amused that Damon was still stuck as a human. Okay, that made his brother infinitely more vulnerable, but watching him sulk about it was kind of hilarious. He hadn't been in Lawrence that long, honestly, but from what he had heard from others, this whole power mix up was likely to reverse itself eventually. In the meantime, he was enjoying a good chuckle at his older brother's expense.

With so many powers all askew, Stefan had volunteered to step in and help with the graveyard patrols. He wasn't normally a part of those teams, but with so many people either losing their native powers or gaining new ones they didn't understand or know how to control, it seemed right to offer the extra help. You definitely didn't want any temporary baby vamps greeting the refugees. That could get... messy. So it was Stefan who stuck close to the graveyard this morning. He'd been up with the sun, enjoying the view as it rose over the trees. Strictly speaking, he hadn't really been to bed yet, but that was a small detail. The important thing was that he had a (wholly unnecessary, he though) icer tucked into the back of his jeans and a comms device in his ear. The transportation device he didn't completely understand was on his wrist, so he didn't necessarily have to stick close to the graveyard, but he did, anyway. He found being here somehow peaceful.

When a familiar blonde approached the gate, Stefan's face broke out into a big smile. Against all odds, Caroline had become one of his best friends. She'd been gone for more than a month and he'd missed her terribly. Seeing her again - or someone who looked like her - filled him with joy. That feeling only lasted a moment, though, as he took in her bloodshot eyes and tearstained face. A closer examination showed some telltale puffiness that accompanied the other obvious signs. Caroline had been crying. He hesitated for the briefest moment, wondering if it was him. He knew he'd hurt her, not long before coming here. She'd been so furious with him, actually, that she hadn't even invited him to her Friendsgiving. If she was from that time, those tears could very well be his fault.

Man up, Salvatore, he chided himself. If he was the reason she was crying, he needed to confront it and apologize, not run away. That was where he'd gotten into trouble with Caroline to begin with, by running away after they lost Damon and Bonnie. Instead, he steeled his nerves and approached his friend.

"Caroline?" he asked her cautiously. He wanted to hug her, but he held back, knowing that if she was actually upset before of him, such a gesture of affection was probably going to get him smacked.

Friendsgiving was such a long time ago it felt like, it really hadn't been that long, but it felt like it had been years ago, forever ago. Klaus once told her she would need to stop thinking about time in the same way, but she hadn't gotten to that stage in her vampire life yet. Right now though time didn't matter, where mattered more than anything else. Where she was, was a much bigger problem.

With her vampire hearing she heard footsteps before she saw who it was, she readied herself to fight if needed, because really anytime she got kidnapped it was usually really, really, really bad. Not just a hey, this sucks kind of thing, but like a life is going to get a million times worse for you kind of thing.

"Stefan." She said and without hesitation sprung into action wrapping her arms around his neck and hiding her face against his shoulder. What she wanted was to not move for a while, but the whole being in a graveyard somewhere that she knew she'd never been before made that much more difficult for her.

Pulling away only 45 seconds after putting her arms around him she stepped back and raised her arms as she spoke. "Where are we? How did we get here? What are you doing here? What am I doing here? I don't know how I'm supposed to keep it together right and be okay with wherever this is. What's going on?" She said quickly and slightly more frantic than she normally even probably would have been.

Well, she didn't hate him. That was a start.

A selfish part of Stefan was relieved that she wasn't from time when she wasn't speaking to him, but he felt immediately guilty for feeling that way. Caroline was very obviously upset about something past randomly finding herself in a graveyard in Kansas. Stefan knew arriving here was unsettling and he knew Caroline didn't have the best experiences with being brought places against her will. He also knew how strong she was, how adaptable. If Caroline was falling apart, that meant something was really, really wrong. Something more than magical kidnapping by mystical seal.

His arms moved around her automatically, as soon as she reached for him. Stefan didn't know yet what was wrong, but that didn't keep him from comforting her. Her hugged her tightly, murmuring reassurances as he rubbed her back and stroked her hair. Even when she pulled back less than a minute later, he continued trying to reassure her. His hands moved to her face and he gently caressed one of her cheeks.

"Shhh, Care, it's okay. You're okay. It's all going to be okay." Whatever it was, he felt confident promising that. Stefan might not 100% return her romantic feelings, but he cared about Caroline and whatever it was wrong, he'd do whatever he could to fix it. Starting with explaining everything about Lawrence to her.

"Come on," he suggested, "there's a diner down not too far from here. Let's go get some coffee and I'll explain everything."

"Okay? Are you kidding me Stefan! NOTHING IS OKAY! NOTHING!" She said her voice getting louder and slightly frantic. "My Mom is dead, how is everything okay? How is anything okay when we got here without even knowing how. My Mom is dead. Of course nothing is okay." She said forcefully as a few tears escaped her eyes.

Caroline had no idea that Stefan hadn't a clue what had happened at home, that he didn't know that Caroline had just lost her mother. She'd now lost both of her parents and while she knew that would happen someday, she didn't think her Mom would die this young, not now. Not when Caroline still needed her, not when she could still learn so much from her about life, about living. Not when...

"I don't want coffee, I don't want to go sit at a diner and pretend everything is okay. I want to know what is going on and I want to know now, what do you mean explain everything to me?"

"What?"Stefan couldn't even begin to hide his shock at her words. The last he'd known, Liz Forbes was fine. Stefan knew things happened, especially in their world. People were there one minute and gone the next. He'd seen people he thought would be around forever taken in an instant. He'd lost his own mother when he was young, he'd lost Lexi and countless other people in between. Stefan knew no one was guaranteed tomorrow, but the idea that Caroline's mom was gone still surprised him. Maybe it shouldn't have, but of all the scenarios he thought could move Caroline to such a state, that was one he hadn't even thought of happening.

Stefan was floored. He didn't know what had happened, but he could imagine how devstated Caroline must be, especially after everything else that had happened recently. All he could think of to do was wrap his arms around her again and try to comfort her, even though there were no words that would ever bring her mom back. Well, not unless she happened to show up here in Lawrence.

"God, Care, I'm so sorry. I had no idea-" which was probably going to sound insane to her, he realized, but he was more worried about comforting her over her mother than about all the explanations she wanted or needed. "How did it happen?" That question sounded crazy, to, so he followed up with a brief explanation that he hoped she'd actually believe.

"I know this is going to sound insane, but we're from different times. It.. hasn't happened for me or any of the rest of us, yet. You must be further along than I am, because I was in Portland with Ric and Damon before I showed up here." He wouldn't get into how they had both been here before and how he clearly didn't remember that just as he hadn't. Not yet, anyway.

Why was Stefan acting like he had no idea what was going on? What was wrong with him? What was wrong with all of this? She felt like she should have pushed away but instead she let herself fall against Stefan again, hugging him was a comfort but there was too much going on in her mind to really understand what was happening, to really feel like she could grieve. That was typical though wasn't it? That she'd have to put all of her problems, all of her pain aside for everything else, for everyone else.

"What do you mean how did it happen? You were there with me!" She exclaimed confused, and if possible more upset, her voice was getting a little more high pitched with every word. "She died of a brain tumor! You were with me, you..." She paused as he started to tell her about Portland.

"Portland! To the freaky Gemini witch people Portland?" She said taking a few steps back. "This isn't possible." She said. "You..." She stopped as she struggled to get herself calmed down even a little. "No. No. No. No. No. This is not happening."

"Oh, god. Caroline, I'm so sorry."

Stefan really didn't know what to say or how to make things better and he hated that. He hated that he couldn't fix this or make it better for her. Caroline didn't deserve this. He knew the world didn't work in terms of what people deserved, but he still hated it, because all he wanted to do was make it better for her and he couldn't.

He nodded his head as she mentioned the Gemini coven. "At Thanksgiving. We'd gone to follow a lead about Bonnie," he added. "I know it sounds crazy, but people can be brought here from different times and places."

Stefan hesitated just a moment before moving forward and reaching out to touch her arm in what he hoped was a comforting gesture. "Damon's from a little before me, but not long. Elena's from before both of us and Bonnie- Caroline, Bonnie's here. She's safe. She's from a little later than the rest of us, but I guess you're ahead of all of us."

There were a lot of people from home here, people he knew he'd have to tell Caroline about, but Stefan paused there, wanting to give her a chance to process what he'd told her so far.

There were a number of questions and thoughts running through her head, but she stopped when she heard Bonnie's name and that Bonnie was safe. She actually let herself smile just a little bit, a sad, relieved, confused and slightly excited smile.

"Bonnie's really here? She's okay? Is she okay? Did she get back? How did she get here? When did she get here? She's okay though right? Is she okay?" Caroline asked fully aware that her questions were all over the place. She struggled to feel as though things could ever be okay again. They couldn't, not really, not with her Mom dead.

"Where is she? Where is everyone? Why are we in a graveyard!" Caroline added looking around. "Because death is exactly the one thing I don't need thrown in my face right now."

Stefan couldn't help smiling a little, himself, as he saw her react to the news about Bonnie. He knew it didn't make up for her mom, not even a little bit. He knew it was going to take her a lot of time to get past losing her, but it was nice to see a more hopeful expression on his face.

"She's here, she's fine. It sounds like the seal pulled her from the prison world. She was here when I got here, so I wasn't here when she arrived, but I've seen here around. She seems fine."

The graveyard was pretty creepy and probably doubly what Caroline didn't need right now. "It's kind of a long story. The short version is that we seem to be in an alternate universe. It's a lot like ours, but it's not ours. Mystic Falls doesn't even exist here. We were brought here by some kind of seal - like the seals in the bible. Apparently we missed an apocalypse or something."

"Come on," he said, gently starting to guide her toward the exit. "Let's get you out of the creepy graveyard. There's a lot I need to fill you in on, but it could take awhile. We should do it somewhere a little more comfortable."

"Seems fine? Seems fine doesn't mean she's actually fine. I need to see her! Now. I need to make sure that she's actually real. Not that I don't trust you, because I do, but it's Bonnie." She said quickly as she tried to force her energy and emotions on Bonnie and not on everything else. Caroline had always had remarkable control for a young vampire, but that didn't mean she didn't struggle with her emotions and the overwhelming feelings of being one sometimes.

"I'm sorry what? Mystic Falls doesn't even exist here? So we can't even go home? Are we freaking stuck in this place?" She said as anxiety filled her heart. "Just freaking great." She said as she sighed out a long annoyed sighed, although her expression was just purely pained.

"Please tell me there is a decent shower where ever you're taking me, because hospital and graveyard smell is not okay."

"Hey, it's okay. She's okay," Stefan reassured her, touching her shoulder in what was meant to be a comforting gesture. He knew Caroline was emotional right now and he didn't blame her for that, but it was automatic for him to try and comfort her.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much reassuring he could say to her questions about Lawrence. All he could do was nod and confirm what she was asking. "We can leave the city, we can go anywhere in the world, but we can't get home. We can't leave this reality, not unless the Seal decides to send us back." He could explain the rest as they walked, like how she'd been here before, but she obviously didn't remember. He didn't want to throw everything at her at once, though, so he was trying to just answer her questions for now.

"It's not all bad, Care," he offered. "There are people here we wouldn't have back home - like Bonnie, Jenna, Lexi." Lawrence wasn't perfect, but he thought having some of the loved ones he thought he'd never see again was worth it.

Chuckling softly, he nodded again when she mentioned a shower. "We'll go to the house first. You can get cleaned up and get in touch with Bonnie," he offered, pulling out his phone to send Damon a quick text.

"Of course we can't go home, because going home would mean actually being okay, actually getting something to go right. Yeah, I get it, home is off limits, nothing new there." She said as angry rushed inside of her. It'd been really hard on Caroline not being able to get back into Mystic Falls when it kept anything supernatural out of it, now it didn't even exist? That was like getting kicked in the guts with wooden high heels over and over again.

Of course Caroline wanted to see the world, but that wasn't really something she could focus on right now, it was just a lot, the not going home part was pretty much one of the worst things possible she could think of, it not existing was pretty shitty too.

She did however get slightly distracted by hearing about Jenna and Lexi. Bonnie she now knew about and that was something she'd see for herself before she fully believed it. "Jenna and Lexi? Are here, and not, you know, dead, or well not dead dead?" Caroline half stated half asked. Caroline had always liked Jenna, and while she didn't know Lexi extremely well, she knew that she was Stefan's best friend and the few times she had talked to her, she'd really liked her.

"Yeah, well I can't smell like a graveyard forever." She said with a sigh.
