Cpt. Steve Rogers ([info]shieldandstar) wrote in [info]wariscoming,
Steve still wasn't used to the idea. He wasn't sure if or when he would be. It was jarring enough to be in Lawrence at all, pulled from what he did know into a whole new mess. But to learn about James on top of all of that.. It didn't bother him, exactly. He wasn't going to run away screaming. That had never been in Steve's nature. What bothered him more was that he had no clue how to be a dad. He'd never known his own, after all, and Nat seemed to have such a good handle on things it felt almost like imposing. If he said as much aloud he he knew Natasha would probably roll her eyes but it couldn't be helped. He had to adjust to this as best he could, but the last thing he wanted to do was let James down. Whether or not he was his real father didn't really matter. Knowing one version had to count for something, right?

"Oh hey," Steve was surprised (and unprepared) to see him awake when he came in this time. "You're awake. That's good. That's great." James had been in and out for most of his visits. They hadn't spoken much at all but that had more to do with the fact that James hadn't really been up to it until recently. He'd known, of course, who James was to him. Natasha had told him from the start but he'd always intended to let James tell him on his own in his own time. The attack sort of sped that up unexpectedly and Steve hoped he wasn't upset about that.

He pulled up a chair by the bed, as was his habit over the last few visits and sat close but not too close. Natasha tended towards sitting right up against the bed in touching distance but Steve wasn't even sure how to go about all that. A pat on the shoulder or something seemed sort of superficial until they had the chance to know each other better.

"How are you feeling today? Do you.. need some help with that?"
