What: Random run-in meeting
Where: On the streets of Lawrence
When: Thursday afternoon
Warnings: None (will change if it becomes necessary)
Status: In progress

Hale knew he was being a coward about things with the way he was avoiding talking to Kenzi to find out if she knew what happened to him back home. Bo was right, he needed to find out but he really didn't think walking up to her and saying So do you already know that I die back home after asking you to marry me? was a good way to go about it. Unfortunately he hadn't thought of any other way to do it which was part of the reason why he'd taken a walk that afternoon. Maybe a walk would clear his mind and help him come up with some way to find out. Because if she didn't know - he'd rather she find out from him than someone else. Or from the internet like he had.

He came to a stop as he looked around, trying to figure out where he was and laughing quietly as he realized he'd somehow managed to get lost. Yeah he was definitely going to have to tell the girls about this when he got back. Maybe the three of them could have a good laugh. He stepped off to the side, leaning against the building behind him as he tried to remember the turns he'd taken so that he could head back while keeping an eye out for any danger at the same time. He heard footsteps coming from behind him and turned his head so that he could see who it was. He didn't recognize them and while there wasn't anything particularly threatening about the person, Hale knew that appearances really didn't mean anything when it came to whether someone was dangerous or not.

Scorpius sometimes hated the Seal. It had taken his father, his best friends, someone who could have been a friend, and one time his girlfriend was taken too. He wondered if he should hold out hope that all, or any, would return again. It was also troublesome that his friend Regina was going through some of that too. He just hoped it was enough that he was still here for support. Though he could get sent back anytime too. He had been once. It nearly boggled his mind that few had come and gone four, or even more than five times before. He supposed Harry might have been one of those. They didn't know each other well here, but the blond wizard had hoped to know him a little, or even practice as Seekers for quidditch. Oh now that was a dream. Compete against the best. Oh well, perhaps next time may be different.

He had lunch at one of the diners, the 12th Street Café. He thought it was good food. He had fries and cheeseburger. So very different than what they served at Hogwarts or even in his own home. In any case, it tasted quite alright and at least helped him forget the past troubles. There was also the fact he had feelings last week for someone he'd never have planned to feel. But thankfully, that was gone now and his emotions were his own. Filled now, he walked out, wearing jeans, a green shirt and jacket. He had nowhere in particular to go. Maybe go somewhere else in the town. Or head to the quidditch location. For now, he just wanted to walk and keep doing so as he was alone in his thoughts. He'd found that a long walk on his own had usually helped in clearing his head. It was working so far.

He hadn't really noticed the man ahead of him, there were several others on the sidewalk in the distance. But then the man had turned to glance at him. Unsure of what to say or the right way to react to the stranger, he just held up a hand and said, "Uh, hi," waving awkwardly. However, his shoe had caught on a sidewalk line and he was caught for a brief second before regaining his footing and continuing on. But.. in the process, his wand had fallen out of his coat onto the ground. A light gasp, he quickly bent down to pick it up. Looking it over with scrutiny and a noted it was still perfect. That was close. "Thank Merlin," he sighed with relief as he stored it back in his jacket pocket.

Hale had noticed the wand that slipped out of the other man's pocket but he didn't say anything. "Hi," he answered him, shifting his stance slightly. He wasn't doing it consciously by any means but he was studying the other male, years of being a cop making it almost second nature to him it seemed. The guy was young, although that didn't really say much because almost everyone was younger than him, and he could have been way off on the other's age - after all Hale didn't look like he had a few centuries on him but he did.

"You're a wizard I take it?" He'd heard about the fact that there were actual people from the Harry Potter books here even if he hadn't actually talked to any of them.

Ohh, the man knew what he was? Of course. The wand was perhaps the biggest clue to that. Couldn't be a local. The question was asked of him being an actual wizard, rather than amusement or jest about him being a fan going to a Potter convention (to which he couldn't usually resist a retort about it actually being a Malfoy convention). Must be one of the displaced, like himself. He didn't remember seeing him before. But then, he probably should meet more people. He seemed alright. Maybe a little cautious but sometimes you had to be in this place. He was like that a lot as well, especially after conflicts or Seal shenanigans.

"Yes, I'm a wizard," he answered the man with a nod, and clearly British accent. "My name is Scorpius." He paused, then added with a slight sigh just in case it was to be a follow-up question as was often the case lately, "And I get this inquiry a lot now, my surname is Malfoy. Well, those from my world ask that question anyway." There were times that he thought of changing it while living here. But then it always came back to the idea that doing so would be giving up his identity and that was just not in him to do. In time maybe his actions may prove that his family name can be respected for the right reasons. "I'm from the future in my world and studying to be an Auror. That's, uhh.. sorta like a cop but the magic version of them in my world. No flying cars yet in my time though, unfortunately." He couldn't help but laugh a bit at that part.

Hale recognized the last name but other than a slight nod he didn't give any indication of it. "My name is Hale Santiago," he told him with a friendly sort of smile and leaving off the part about Clan Zamora. He'd never cared much about the title or any of the other things that came with being the heir to the Clan. He just wanted to be himself.

"I was a cop back in my world before the Seal brought me here, it's not the easiest line of work but it's rewarding. My partner and I got some interesting cases involving....different kinds of people." He wasn't sure if Scorpius would have ever heard of his show, Lost Girl. He hadn't seen any advertisements for it on the television but that didn't mean they hadn't been on. He could have just missed them. He couldn't help but grin when Scorpius mentioned the lack of flying cars. "I think that's something our worlds have in common - we don't have them either unfortunately. I wish we did though - I think they'd be a lot of fun to drive."

"Nice to meet you, sir," Scorpius replied with a polite nod, having been raised with manners involving acknowledging new people. So he was a cop? That was quite brilliant. With the cop and Auror comparison, he was curious about his line of work. Different kinds of people? He was curious if that meant people other than human. In which case, very bloody interesting. Probably had stories. "You could do police work here too.. I mean, if you wanted to do that again. There had been a few among us displaced that did it, after getting Connor or another hacker to make them IDs and records to be able to work here. There was the sheriff from the fairytale show, and the Martian hero John from Smallville, they did good work in it. And someone named Tamsin though I'd never spoken to her before."

He understood rewards. Sometimes it can be more important than getting paid large amounts of money. "I get the rewarding part," he said then, "getting in was probably difficult, I bet. The tests. The training, pushing yourself to succeed, and more tests, etc. But in the end, it's worthwhile work, as well as serves to help people and society in the long run. That's my main reason, to be able to help people and stop bad stuff from going on." Flying cars was a new subject as well, one that always came up when speaking of the future. That, along with aliens and teleporters. "Nope, no flying cars. Well, wait.. there was one flying car. Back in my parents' time, but it was an isolated incident. Not sure what happened to it, something about it being lost in a forest with an ornery living tree. Ron Weasley would know more of it."

"Nice to meet you to Scorpius and you don't have to call me sir. That's my dad's thing not mine," Hale told him. Not wanting to be called sir had been one more way he'd tried to distance himself from his father and the attitude the man had about faes and humans. "I'm going to have to look into that. Being a cop was probably the best job I'd found. Definitely better than being the Ash," he said, trying not to show how much hearing Tamsin's name mentioned made him miss her being here. She'd been taken a while ago but there were times he still felt like his friend had just been taken the day before. "You said I should talk to a guy named Connor about an ID and work records?" he asked, wanting to make sure that he had the name right. That was going on his to-do list with talking to Kenzi.

"That's the right reason to go into law enforcement as far as I'm concerned - wanting to help people and try to stop bad things from happening. It doesn't matter what world you're from. Or at least it shouldn't matter. And as for it being difficult to get in - yeah. It was. I had to study a lot for the tests and then there's more tests if you want promotions. Or at least that's how it worked back home."

"Thanks. Oh.. right, sorry. Bit of habit from school and my grandfather, it's usually formal back there," Scorpius spoke as explanation. "I guess we can stick with Hale, and you can call me Scor. Everyone calls me that." He wasn't sure what the Ash reference was, but he supposed he could be told of it if such were an important topic later on. "Connor Temple, yeah. Except I heard the Seal had sent him back. Maybe he returned but I haven't heard of that yet. There might be other folks who do that stuff, like Claudia if present, or Skye, or even Sam Winchester who usually did it when Connor was busy. Probably good to post on the boards, to include a filter to general hacker or science types, and maybe Connor too if he's returned. I'm thinking I should start job hunting for myself soon too."

He couldn't help but agree. Helping people was a worthy goal. "I admit, part of my reason was to prove myself to others. My family name had a bit of a stigma due to their past. Sins of the father following the son, or something like that. Most learned to trust me but there were still a few who still don't think I'm different or whatever. But.. to be able to help people, it's my biggest goal for this. I know I have the right skills, I just need to get the chance to use them for the right side. I've also done that here too. Mostly magic, but I've also taken classes for muggle weapons and unarmed fighting. Turns out those lessons come in quite useful when living in this kind of world."

"You don't need to apologize - I get it. Sounds a little like how I grew up Scor," Hale told him with a friendly smile. The more he talked to the young man in front of him the more convinced he became that his gut instinct had been right - Scorpius wasn't a bad guy. "I'll do that. Thanks. Although I got to admit - it's a little weird to me that I'm going to be using falsified documents to get a job with the police." Not that the weirdness was going to discourage him any.

"I think sometimes one of the hardest things to do is to get people to see you as something other than your parents kid," he told him, understanding showing on his face and in his voice. He knew plenty of people who expected him to be nothing more than another version of his father - with his same opinions and feelings towards humans. Which really couldn't be further from the truth. "The more skills you have the better chance of surviving in a world like this." A lot of things in this world reminded him of home - especially the fact that the supernatural world, the beings that were a part of it, existing side by side with the human world without most of the humans suspecting was definitely familiar. "Being able to use human weapons and whatever you know from home - sounds like a good idea to me. Finding a good balance between the two." His first instinct was probably always going to be to use his whistle but that was the Siren's natural weapon so it made sense.
