WHO Henrik & Cami
WHAT Cami makes Henrik a snack and they talk books!
WHERE The Compound
WHEN Earlier this week.
RATING/STATUS PG tops / Complete
Things were, they were getting a little bit better here with every single day. Cami was actually glad that she and Caroline had spent some time together and gotten to know each other a little bit better. It just made the whole awkwardness of everything a little bit better, more well, normal for lack of a better way of putting it.
Cami had just finished up running to the grocery store, she knew she didn’t actually need to but some habits were hard to let go of. The compound always seemed to have enough but Cami felt like she should buy some stuff of her own and do what she could here. It was also something that was extremely and totally normal. Something normal in life was pretty important to Cami, it was part of being human or something like that.
As she was walking towards the kitchen she caught sight of a little boy, well he wasn’t that little, but a young boy. “Hey, Henrik right?” She said making a stab at it, she hadn’t met him officially yet, but she’d seen him around and had made a point to know who he was. “I’m Cami, one of Marcel and Davina’s friends.” They were the two she felt she actually knew the best, or at least knew her.
~~~
Henrik had been looking for Davina. He had wanted to talk to her about a spell that he was trying to do and wasn’t quite working out the way he wanted it to. She was a witch from his world and though it seemed that they did different kinds of magic in some ways the basics did seem to be the same a lot of the time. She didn’t seem to be home though and he hadn’t seen Marcel either so he had been heading toward the kitchen to get a snack before going home.
“Hello!” He had seen Cami around a few times, though he hadn’t actually spoken to her at all yet. “It’s nice to meet you.” He looked at the bags she was carrying and shifted to the side so she could get by him in the hallway. “Do you need help with them?”
It was the polite thing to do and he knew that bags like that were for groceries. Since they were heading to the same room it only seemed right to offer up his help.
~~~
Polite, Cami thought to herself as she smiled at the greeting, he seemed like a really nice kid, which was just good to see. Part of Cami wondered what it must be like for him, being taken from something a different world and time to now and here. Modern life must be really different, actually she wondered how vampires felt when they looked back. She'd heard Klaus talk about his past in vivid detail but it was mostly the violence and complaining about his family rather than the historical significance of seeing the changes in humanity.
"Sure, that'd be great." She said holding out one of the bags for him to take. It did look like they were headed in the same direction and she was perfectly content for the help. The bags weren't overly heavy, but she knew actually allowing someone to help often was a good way to get to know them.
"Are you here looking for someone?" She inquired.
~~~
“I was trying to find Davina to talk to her about a spell I’m trying to do but I don’t think she’s here.” He really needed to remember to call ahead but using new technology like the phones was something he was still getting around to be used to. He liked the tablet more but only because it let him reach the network and talk to other people more easily than typing in the phone ever did. Plus it held his two dragon movies, the only two things that he cared to watch.
Henrik set the bag down on the kitchen counter and started taking things out to help put them away. “You’re not a supernatural, are you?” He didn’t sense any vampirism in her. Nor did he think she was a werewolf but maybe she could be, he couldn’t sense those. She definitely wasn’t a witch.
“Is it okay to ask that?” Henrik wasn’t too sure. Was that being rude? Most of his family was one in some way or another and he knew that Marcel and Davina were as well...but maybe he shouldn’t have been so blunt in his question.
~~~
"I don't think she is either, but I could call her if you want. I'd offer to help, but I'm not really much of one for helping with spells." She admitted with a smile. Even though she now had all of the magical files and things that her family had been keeping hidden for years. All of that was now here and she was still going through it and trying to learn about all of the different things that were there. There was a lot, and it was scary, really scary.
As she put her bag on the table and started to pull things out she nodded. "Human." Cami answered with a smile and a shrug. "Totally, and completely human." She did not add the part about nearly being turned into a vessel for his sister, she didn't think the kid needed to hear how insane she thought his mother was.
"Of course it's okay." Cami said waving the question off, she really didn't mind, more did she blame the kid. "I'd be wondering too, especially around the compound. I'd probably ask myself, so why is there a human mixed up in all of this, and if I find the answer, I'll be sure to tell you." She said with hints to a joke but truths mixed in with it. "So, do I get to ask what kind of spell you're attempting, even if I can't help with it, talking it out might help you come to the solution you're looking for on your own. I could make us something to eat while you tell me about it." Kids needed to eat right?
~~~
Henrik scrunched his nose at the idea of food. He did want some, but he’d quickly learned that not everyone could actually cook things. “I think I would like a sandwich.” It was very difficult to ruin one of those. “Or fruit is good, but I am not supposed to have any sweets right now.” Otherwise he’d miss out on cookies for dessert after dinner and he did not want that to happen.
“I am trying to make a locator charm so I can give Toothless a collar with it. That way I can always find him if he flies off.” The last thing he wanted was for the little dragon to get lost and cause trouble. Toothless was very good at doing that. “I know how to do them in water or on maps but I do not like the map one.” Blood was needed for that one and it took a lot of energy out of a person.
“I am not sure how I would manipulate a piece of quartz or something like that to be a beacon for me though. I thought she might have some ideas.” If not he could always ask Kol but he wanted to try Davina first.
~~~
Cami wasn't a world class cook, but she did know a thing or two having worked in places with people who could actually cook, like how to cut fruit well as a bartender and not burn things. The thought made her a little bit sad, but luckily she was pulled out of the thought by fruit being considered a sweet. "Fruits good for you, never really thought of them as sweets, more as things that taste good and are good for you too." Cami said but figured maybe the kid had a different definition of candy and things that were good or bad for someone. "But up to you, I can make a sandwich or just get you some fruit, or there is some celery in there which is good with peanut butter and raisins." Also something pretty much impossible to mess up. "Ants on a log."
Cami gave him a small curious expression. "Toothless?" She had yet to hear about the little dragon. At first she was going to ask if that was a dog, but the flies away part stopped her and for some reason she figured she'd just wait to hear rather than asking more questions about the pet.
Nodding, Cami didn't really blame him. "You know what, I think there might be a book I can look for that might have something on that, but I bet Davina will be able to help you when she gets home." Cami had full faith in the girl.
~~~
“I like ants on a log. But I made them with chocolate chips when I did them with Caroline.” Maybe there would be some of those in one of the pantries. Though he supposed raisins would work as well, probably not as sweet as bits of chocolate but they’d still add flavor to it.
He got up and headed over to the cupboard that usually stored the chocolate chips. It helped that he’d lived at the compound for a few months back before they had bought a house to live in. He knew where to find the plates and the knives to help spread the peanut butter and set them out on the kitchen counter.
“Toothless is my dragon. I wished for him with the bauble and now he is here.” Well. “Not right here.” He was at home napping and hopefully would stay that way until Henrik arrived back there. The last thing he wanted was for the dragon to cause any trouble while he was gone. “And I would like to look at the book if you think you can find it.”
He would also ask Davina when he saw her again but it couldn’t hurt to get a look at the book now as well.
~~~
Somehow that didn't surprise her, but she just smiled. "I don't think I've done them with chocolate chips before, at home it was always raisins." Cami said, "But I would love to try it with chocolate chips, I'd never turn down that." She added with a smirk.
Cami watched him amused as he got out some of the things, she made a point to clean the celery and get it chopped into good even sizes, something she was good with given how often she chopped fruit and other things like that. And celery, but for more adult beverages than for something like this.
"Oh. I don't think I've ever met a dragon before." That was very true too, vampires, witches, werewolves and hybrids sure, dragons? Not so much. She didn't even really know if she believed in them actually.
~~~
“He’s only a baby right now. I do not think he’s over a foot tall yet.” Henrik wasn’t entirely sure how big Toothless would grow. Hopefully not too big or there would be even more issues involved with having a dragon around. At least with his current size he could easily hide him. It also helped that his house was situated on a lot of land and their nearest neighbors couldn’t see into the property.
He set the finished pieces onto two plates and sat down at the table in the kitchen, placing a plate down for Cami so she could try some as well. “He’s a really nice dragon. He’s scared of Lily and Tanni too. And he’s learned that he cannot breathe fire inside or he’ll get in trouble.” Not that he could even breathe a lot of it but it was better for the little dragon to learn the rules now.
“Maybe I will bring him over the next time so you can see him.” Henrik grinned as he bit into his log, enjoying the sweet peanut buttery taste of it. “Did you have pets when you were young? We did not. The animals were working ones or for food.”
~~~
Cami smiled as she listened to him talk about the dragon named Toothless, which wasn't a name she would picture for a dragon, but maybe as a kid it would have made more sense to her. Right now though, she just thought it was cute, really cute.
"Thanks." She said as she took the plate but paused for a moment. "Do you want a glass of water or milk?" She asked knowing she'd want something to drink with this kind of food. Which was why she turned to get something to drink, pausing to see if he wanted one as well.
"That'd be nice, I'd love to meet him." Cami said pausing for a moment. "We had a family dog growing up. My brother and I begged when we were younger and our father caved and we ended up with a golden mix, good dog." She said smiling a slightly sad smile. "It must be strange, coming to such a more modern time."
~~~
“What did you name your dog? Our dog is Lily. She’s really little and won’t ever get bigger either. She can fit into a bag.” Henrik told her as he contemplated his beverage choice. “Water is fine.” He’d already had some milk earlier for breakfast and knew he’d get more again at dinner time.
“Nik pretends to think she’s annoying but he lets her follow him into his art studio so I know he actually likes her.” It probably helped that the tiny dog didn’t bother eating his paintbrushes or canvases. Simply curled up in a spot and watched him paint or fell asleep. “She accidentally bumped paint onto her once and she was blue for hours. It took a long time to wash her off.”
“And it can be difficult. It was a lot more so when I first got here. I could only really talk to my family and others who knew Old Norse. Not many really did.” It had made getting to know others much more difficult. Thankfully his first wish had helped him out with that.
~~~
Getting to glasses of water she smiled thinking about their dog. "Clifford, after the books Clifford the Big Red Dog, although our Clifford wasn't a giant nor was he red, it was just a book we loved as kids and that's how we got the name." Cami smiled as she thought back to the happier easier times.
She was glad that she got to turn and focus on the water when Henrik brought up Klaus. "Yeah, she sounds like a good dog…" Cami said as she laughed a little bit. "Did you have little blue paw prints all over the place too?" She asked as she did everything in her mental power to not think about Klaus. It was so awkward sometimes and she knew that she was the one that was making it awkward because she was the idiot who was struggling to put all of her feelings and experiences away.
"It sounds like you've learned English really way." Cami said smiling. "I imagine it was difficult at first though, it must be interesting to see how much things have changed though too."
~~~~
He didn’t have an idea of who Clifford was but Henrik made a mental note to look him up when he was home. “She got them all over before we managed to catch her.” He grinned as he remembered the chaos of that day, how they’d run after her to try and stop her from getting too far. But Lily had been slippery and thought it was a game so she’d given them a run for their money. “Kol says she is a yappy dog.”
The world had changed a lot in the last one hundred years and it was still daunting for him in a lot of ways. “I like some of the changes but not all of them. It is very busy here and we do not all live together any more.” They had at first. Or at least nearly all of them had. Rebekah hadn’t but she hadn’t been too far away. “It is better that we are not though. They were all very angry when we lived together at Elijah’s house. I think they get along better now.”
Well, almost all of them. “And I can visit the others whenever I like so it is not too bad. Just strange.”
~~~
"That must have been really funny." And a huge pain to clean up, Cami didn't add that part though. She laughed when he told her what Kol thought. "Yeah? I guess small dogs are called yappie pretty often." Cami admitted knowing that did seem to be something that happened often.
Cami had some experience with how the Original family worked and how dramatic they could be sometimes. She nodded. "That's good that they get along better now." Cami admitted knowing that sometimes space was good.
"Sometimes a little bit of space is good, especially when you get to go visit them too." Cami said with a smiling. "So, how long have you been here now?"
~~~
“Yes, that is what Nik wants with them. Space.” And it really was better than it had been last spring. It had been hard at first and he had been very angry with his other siblings for a while, but he had moved past that once he’d gotten sick. He still didn’t want to live with any of them permanently but he didn’t mind visiting them.
“I have been here a year now. I arrived at the end of last December.” He was pretty sure about that. He hadn’t known the name of the month then. “It was very cold here last year because of Elsa. She did not know how to control her powers.”
~~~
The amount of space and desire for being around siblings all at once always amazed Cami when it came to the Mikaelson family. It was always surprising and interesting. Although she tended to think that Finn was the worst, she of course would never say that outloud nor or probably ever, to any of them… But that was a different problem one that her recently found memories sort of messed with.
“Elsa, the Queen from Frozen?” Cami asked having now at least heard about her a couple of times. It seemed she was pretty popular, although Cami couldn’t imagine freezing December would be really that popular, she could understand the struggle of controlling something. “Did she eventually learn?”
~~~~
“She got way better and figured out how to stop making it so cold all the time.” But then she’d left. “I liked when she made the ice rink in summer though. That was fun.” He hadn’t ever really ice skated before then. The Falls would freeze over some back home but nowhere near enough for it to be safe to walk on.
“She left a while ago. I didn’t really watch her movie though.” It just hadn’t peaked his interest. He’d like the Tangled one a little bit but still prefered to read instead of watching the TV. “Do you like movies? I don’t like many. I like the books here more. Sometimes we go to the library so I can get new ones. And if I like the book a lot then Nik lets me buy it for our library.”
~~~
“Ice rink in summer would be a lot of fun. Probably a lot less cold than this time of year, unless she made summer cold too?” Although it sounded like Elsa had figured it out. Still it sounded all sounded weird to Cami, despite the fact that she was used to the supernatural world, she just wasn’t used to the concept of everything else yet. She was getting there it was just going to take some time.
“I’ve never seen the movie either, heard the song, yeah, seen the movie, not yet. You know, I haven’t actually thought about watching a movie in a long time.” Cami admitted. “They can be a lot of fun, but I guess life gets too busy sometimes to fit them in. I think it’s great that you like reading.” She told him, knowing that reading wasn’t something that kids really liked to do these days but she also supposed that given where his life had started that he might see things differently.
“So, you guys have a big library?” That didn’t surprise her at all.
~~~
“It’s fairly big. Not as big as the public one that we go to or the bookstore, but it has a lot of books. Some of them are first editions too.” He didn’t really understand the fuss about that, especially because he wasn’t supposed to touch those ones. They were for looking at only. He found that to be silly. Even first edition spellbooks were meant to be touched and handled until they were ripping at the seams.
“But Elsa did not make summer cold. She could control it by then. She did not mean to make winter cold at first.” He finished off his sandwich and wiped his mouth with a napkin before moving to rinse the plate off in the sink. “Do you have a favorite book?” It was always fun to see what everyone liked to read.
~~~
That also didn't surprise Cami either. "Sounds about right." She said with a soft smile. Yes, that did sound just about right and really unsurprising to her at all. It was interesting hearing about how some things stayed the same while other things were drastically different. Cami decided to hold onto the small things that she could. It was nice to think about those.
"That's good." Cami said finding it funny how many people seemed to really like Elsa, she found it nice, it was just weird thinking about the let it go song and than that the person was actually here and not just a Disney cartoon. Than again people might find it weird that she wasn't just a character from some tv show. Thank god she couldn't watch it here. "Wow." Cami said blinking. "You know, if I'm honest, I don't know." She really didn't know. "I've spent a lot of time reading text books lately, or things for school that reading for fun? I feel like I haven't made enough time for that lately. Which I should change...." Cami said. "I have always liked classics, the Odyssey I've read a couple of times. What about you?"
~~~
“I really enjoyed The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I just finished that one yesterday.” He had read so many books recently that sometimes they all seemed to blur together. “I think the Eragon ones are my favorites though.” Because of the dragons. He just really felt a kinship toward those animals. Probably because they were as out of place in this time as he felt at times.
“I also enjoy when Floki tells me stories. He usually speaks about the old ways and myths of the Norse gods.” Those were the tales he had grown up on. They reminded him of his family, of the ones who weren’t there. And while he hoped that Esther and Mikael would never come to Lawrence, he couldn’t help missing Esther at least a little. She was his mother and he knew that she did love him.
~~~
"I haven't read those books in a long time, and Eragon is about dragons right?" She asked not being completely sure, she hadn't read those books but she sort of remembered when there were movie posters out for it. It seemed most young adult fiction was being turned into movies as of late. Whatever made money she supposed.
"Floki?" She asked not exactly sure who he was talking about. "Norse gods are interesting ones, that's for sure." Cami agreed. Although she sometimes worried about what would happen of actual gods from stories showed up here, which was probably really possible... Heck, for all she knew some could already be here.
~~~
“Yes, it is about dragons. Floki lives at our house with us now. Klaus found him and he wished for Thor’s goat from the stories. It is only a little goat right now though. He is a viking.” From before his time. Like Lagertha was, though he knew the legends about her and her first husband. Not so much anything about Floki.
“He is an amazing storyteller. Probably because you had to be back then. Books were not as easily accessible.” Oral tradition had been the only way to pass tales and history along. He remembered those days well and missed them terribly sometimes. It just wasn’t quite the same any longer. People didn’t seem to simply sit around and tell stories anymore. Though he did sit at the dinner table with Klaus and Caroline and tell them about his day a lot.
~~~
No matter what was going on, there were always surprises. “Oh, well I’m glad he’s found a place to stay.” She said actually meaning it, everyone deserved somewhere, somewhere they could feel safe, somewhere they could relax and feel at home. She just hoped she’d make this place feel more like home soon. “Especially given the Goat needs a good home.” She said smiling.
Nodding, she could only imagine. “I suppose he must tell of some amazing adventures and experiences. How is he finding the modern day?”
~~~
"Okay I think." It was probably harder for his new friend. Plus Henrik knew that Floki didn't have his family there like he did. Having his siblings around made adjusting a lot easier.
"I should probably get home now. Please tell Davina that I stopped by." Leaving the dragon at home alone for any long lengths of time usually ended in disaster and he wanted to get home before anything happened. "Thank you for spending time with me. And the snack. "
~~~
Nodding she only could imagine what it must be like for Floki.
Nodding as Henrik told her he should probably go she stood up. "Yeah, anytime. Always happy for a little company." Cami said meaning it, she didn't mind at all. She liked having company sometimes, and he was a good kid.
"You got it, and I'll look for that book too and let you know when I find it."
