“Well, maybe I did it on purpose just to get your attention.” Jefferson countered, a bit sheepishly. It wasn’t a very good defence, and he wasn’t sure how smart a noisy break in to get attention really sounded. It was borderline creepy, and he did appreciate that Regina seemed more amused with his efforts than angry. It was the best reaction he could have hoped for for such an ill-fated, harebrained scheme. Jefferson shuffled, using the side of his foot to brush some of the glass shards into a pile before taking a few steps forward, closer to the former Queen.
While he wasn’t sure he’d ever be comfortable calling Regina a friend, he’d go so far as to consider her an ally. They were a lot alike, really, ruthless, but generally for the right reasons. To protect those they cared about or to get them back. There was sort of a familiarity there, and he assumed a slight understanding. And here, in a whole new world with new people and new opportunities -- even the smallest threat of sameness seemed to go a long way. It wasn’t exactly trust, but it was something just a little bit like it.
After debating what to say next for a few moments longer, Jefferson looked up ad her and smiled, as though owning how embarrassing all of this was was the only way he was going to get through it. “Really, I just wanted to visit. You know, but I didn’t exactly know how to ask.”
